"I am proud of what I have been able to accomplish along with my fellow commissioners during my time in office," says Mr. Imperatore, "There is so much more to be done and I would like to continue to serve as commissioner of the best park district in the state of New York."
He is proud of the "many new facilities" and all of the renovations and modernizations that have been accomplished during his tenure as park commissioner. The marina, Parkwood Pool, Parkwood's ice skating rink, and the many neighborhood parks have all been renovated and modernized "in an effort to maintain the excellent reputation the park district enjoys on a local as well as a national level," according to Mr. Imperatore.
New facilities built during his tenure include the maintenance building at the Parkwood Sports Complex, the indoor tennis building (also at Parkwood), and, most recently, the new toilet buildings at Kings Point Park, Allenwood Park, and Cuttermill Park.
Also as a park commissioner, Mr. Imperatore emphasizes that he was "instrumental in protecting the Peninsula Club property in Thomaston from falling into the hands of developers who had planned to build homes on the site." The Peninsula Club property is now owned by the park district and is "land-banked for future use as a recreational facility."
Andrew Imperatore's service to the Great Neck community encompasses many positions, including mayor of the Village of Great Neck, as well as trustee. While serving as mayor, he introduced the first successful newspaper recycling program on the peninsula.
And it was Mr. Imperatore who arranged for senior citizens' transportation back in the days when the senior center was located in the Old Village, on Hicks Lane.
In 1991 he was awarded the Jesse. M. Markel "Man of the Year" award by the Great Neck Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Imperatore was appointed to the park board of commissioners by the town board, in 1979, to complete the term of Harry Reed who had retired.
