The North Shore Men’s Varsity Lacrosse Team had two tough losses this week to start their 2010 season. In their season opener on Tuesday, the Vikings fell to Bellmore JFK. Despite a strong defensive effort, led by junior goalie Alec Volpe, and giving up only one goal in the second half, the Vikings were unable to find their rhythm on offense and fell to the Cougars by a score of 8-4. The East Meadow Jets then traveled to North Shore on Thursday for another hard fought game. Again, the defense put up a strong fight, this time led by co-captains Nick Capparelli and Danny Broker. The offense, still trying to find its way, was unable to match the scoring production of the Jets and so the Vikings were unable to pull out the victory.
With the end of the varsity season, End of Year Awards were voted upon. Several players from the North Shore Girls Basketball team received recognition from the opposing coaches. Three were recognized with All-Conference Honors, meaning that they were one of the top players in the Conference, juniors Elizabeth Sheerin and Jackie Gioia and freshman Erin Sheerin (who finished 7th in Nassau County in assists). Senior Elle Hoffman (10 points per game and 3rd in Nassau County in 3-point shots) and sophomore Amanda Johansen (10 points per game, 9.8 rebounds which was 3rd in the county and 4.9 assists which was 2nd in the county) received All-Class Honors (meaning that they were both top players in all of Class A). Senior Kathleen Lennon won All-County honors. For a player to be All-County that means that she was one of the top players in all of Nassau County, regardless of Class. Kathleen averaged 15.2 points per game (16th in the county) and 12 rebounds, which was good for #1 in Nassau County! In addition, senior Jennifer Melgar was recognized for athletic and academic achievements as the Scholar/Athlete Award winner and All-Academic New York State. The team also should be recognized for their basketball achievements. North Shore averaged just under 61 points per game, which was good for #1 in Nassau County. In addition, the girls hit 110 3-pointers which led the county and seems to be a record number for Nassau County (complete records are not available for all years). Finally, seniors Elle Hoffman and Kathleen Lennon represented North Shore in the Senior All-Star game on March 20th at St. Joseph’s College and both played extremely well. Congratulations to the North Shore team on an outstanding season!
