Girls Varsity Lacrosse Excited to Start Season

The varsity squad this year is full of enthusiasm, drive, aggression and speed and is ready to move forward from last year’s success. There are 20 girls on the squad and Lauren Portnoy is the new assistant coach. Portnoy was the junior varsity coach last season and is a wonderful addition to the team.

The 20 player squad is led by 12 returning players: Seniors Ariana Cavallone, Alex Gerin, Tori Durso, Emily Durso, Ali Durso, Alison Abrams, Meghan O’Connell, Briana Moglia, Remi Farnan. Juniors: Gabby Morrocu, Lauren Dwyer, Angelica Morra. Newcomers to the squad are seniors: Meghan Peet, Delia Trainor. Juniors: Jennifer Ingegno, Emily Asip. Sophmores: Samantha DiPaola, Gillian Farnan, Christina DelGrosso. Freshman: Selena Guastella.

This year’s varsity is captained by Ariana Cavallone, Alex Gerin and Tori Durso who are already showing their leadership qualities both on and off the field. In the offense they have established many plays that the girls feel comfortable running and hope that Ariana Cavallone, Alex Gerin and Gabby Morrocu (the leading scorers from last year) will continue to find the back of the net, Tori Durso, Angelica Morra, Meghan O’Connell, Christina DelGrosso and Remi Farnan seem goal hungry also. The goalkeeper this year is Gillian Farnan, who exudes confidence and can be heard directing the defense from her circle. The defense is relatively new but is led by Alison Abrams and Emily Durso with Lauren Dwyer, Brianna Moglia, Ali Durso, Samantha DiPaola, Jennifer Ingegno and Selena Guastella who are stepping into their new roles very well indeed. Meghan Peet, Delia Trainor, and Emily Asip are playing both ends of the field and have already made their presence felt.

Last Saturday Glen Cove hosted a five-team play day where they were able to test their skills and strategies against varying opposition; this was so beneficial and this week they will hone in on the fine-tuning that they need before their opening game at home against rival Carey on Thursday.

For the past two years they have split games with Carey both times by one goal. The schedule is tough but they intend to be very competitive and come out with closely contended victories.
