Boys Varsity Lacrosse Ready for 2012

The Big Red Varsity Lacrosse Team is ready to open their 2012 season. Coach Steve Tripp enters his 25th season at the helm of Glen Cove and said, “We have had a lot of success over the past four years, and I feel this group can pick up where last year’s team left off.”

The 2011 season ended in the playoffs, and this year’s team is looking to continue the momentum. For that to happen, the Big Red will rely on their senior class to provide the leadership that all good teams have. Captains Dennis Ramadan and Chris Saperstein are playing their third season on the varsity. Ramadan’s shooting will play a big factor in the 2012 season. Saperstein, the Big Red’s faceoff specialist, is on the sidelines right now, rehabbing off-season knee surgery. GC’s other two captains will play two vital roles for the Big Red. Scott Nicolich is the Big Red’s playmaker and the team’s leading returning scorer. Goalie Nick Manzione proved to be a more than capable goaltender as he garnered Honorable-Mention All-County honors in 2011.

Nick Papachristou and Christian Klimaszewski both saw action for the Big Red in 2011, and will be the targets of Nicolich’s feeds on attack. Seniors Christian Ring and Dominik Sierzega will round out the first midfield with Ramadan. Both have shown the all-around game needed for success at the midfield. Junior Harrison Smith who saw varsity action in 2011, will be joined by fellow junior Rakim Lilly and sophomore Billy Neice on the second midfield.

Tripp is excited about his second line, “All three can take the ball to the goal, and play tenacious defense,” said the coach.

Assistant Coach Frank Curatolo will be in charge of a young defensive squad led by Manzione. Senior James Houser, junior Shawn Blumhagen, sophomore Max McCrindle and freshman Sean Peet will play the long poles.

“Our group is more athletic than last year’s, which will allow us to be a little more aggressive this year,” said Curatolo.

The team opens on the road on Friday at West Hempstead, and will play their first home game on Tuesday, March 20 versus Herricks at 4:45 p.m. Come out and see the fastest game on two feet!
