The Glen Cove Pee Wee Cardinals are off to a good start with a record of 2 and 0 in the first two weeks of play.
On Sunday, Sept. 11, they traveled to Valley Stream for a noon game.
They started off strong and scored on their first offensive drive with a touchdown by Joseph Johnson. The extra point was scored by Madison Patino. Also having yards gained were Richard Perez and quarterback Jesse Barnes.
Defense didn’t let Valley Stream get anywhere with tackles behind the line of scrimmage by Josue Cruz, David Berlin and Joseph Johnson.
After a great carry by Richard Perez, Joseph Johnson again scored. This time the extra point was no good.
Before the half, the Cardinals would again score with a touchdown by Madison Patino. Jesse Barnes scored the extra point. The score at the half was 20-0.
As is the practice in junior football, when a team is up by 3 touchdowns, the opposing team gets to choose four players to remove from the game. Those chosen were Joseph Johnson, Josue Cruz, Jah’Tay Hernandez and Richard Perez.
Glen Cove soon scored again, after the half, on a 26-yard run by David Berlin.
Late in the third quarter, Valley Stream scored.
Defense was strong all game. Jesse Barnes, Anthony Schettino, David Berlin, Madison Patino and Matteo Cameron all had tackles.
Valley Stream scored again right as the game was drawing to an end. The final score was Cardinals 26 and Valley Stream 12.
Thomas Poncet, Cayden Burnet, Peter Liotta, Justin Barwick, John D’Addario, Ryan Evans, and Dillon Fahey all played hard on both sides of the ball. Giovanni Calo, Christian Maiorana, Savion Allen-Vega, Christopher Gielbeda, James Lopez, Vincent Pascucci, Orazio Petito and Robert Arena all gave great effort.
On Saturday, Sept. 17, the Pee Wees hosted West Babylon for a 6 p.m. game under the lights at City Stadium.
On the first play of the game, Joseph Johnson scored on a 60-yard touchdown run. The extra point was no good.
Although there were numerous runs for yards gained by Richard Perez, Madison Patino, Jesse Barnes and Johnson, there would be no more scoring by either side. Johnson and Josue Cruz both recovered West Babylon fumbles. David Berlin, Anthony Schettino, Johnson and Patino also had numerous tackles.
A tough effort was given by all, holding West Babylon to limited yards gained and allowing for the win.
The Cardinals next game is in Oyster Bay, next Sunday, Sept. 25 at 10 a.m.
