The North Shore Football team lost a heartbreaker in the season opener to Malvern High School. The day started off with a dignified ceremony with both teams lined up in unity to honor the victims of Sept. 11. A moment of silence followed the National Anthem capped off by a powerful rendition of Taps, performed by two members of the North Shore music department.
The Vikings defense held tough all game forcing six turnovers including a stripped ball by sophomore safety Josh Schwartz. Junior Ken Daley led the defense in tackles including a big hit on the quarterback causing Malvern’s second turnover. The Vikings offense kicked into high gear in the fourth quarter when senior quarterback Mike Divincenzo connected with senior receiver James Lennon for an 8-yard touchdown pass. Kicker Michael Mendelsohn added the extra point. Late in the fourth quarter the Vikings got the ball back and were driving for the win; however, the drive stalled on the 35-yard line, ending the game.
The final score was Malvern 12 and North Shore 7.
