What a terrific final three games for the varsity girl’s lacrosse team. Going into the game against Carey on their turf field both teams were undefeated. Playing conditions were perfect and Glen Cove went out to a 4-3 lead at the half with two goals from Olivia Silvestri. Carey came back and tied the game at 6 -6 when Gabby Morrocu put in the winning shot with 4:31 left in the game. Scorers were Olivia Silvestri with 3 goals and Alex Gerin and Gabby Morrocu each with 2 goals. Amelia Weck had 9 saves. However, this was a total team effort where all players gave their all and made vital contributions.
The next game was Sewanhaka who were also undefeated and we played them at home. The girls came out to play and put together a very comfortable lead; by half time it was 8 – 2. Sewanhaka began the second half very aggressively and at one point pulled to within three goals but Glen Cove took the challenge and continued scoring finishing with the win 15 – 9. Once again it was a terrific game from all the players.
Finally with Glen Cove being the only undefeated team we had to play Elmont on our Senior Game Day. The sun was shining and the conditions were idyllic and the team played so well finishing the game with a win 14- 4 and the coveted title of conference champions 2011. What a way to end the careers of our seniors, Julie Bruschini, Julia Oh, Cassandra Napoli, captains Heather Artinian, Olivia Silvestri, Amelia Weck and manager Amber Solomito. Thank you seniors for all your leadership; you are great role models for the team. Now we move into the playoffs seeded number 12 in the B Classification and will play Plainedge seeded number 5, in the first round.
“Girls Lacrosse has not won the conference title since 2001 and we are thrilled with this title, we the coaches appreciate all the time, effort and enthusiasm that this team have given to the sport and are so proud of their achievement. Congratulations Girls Varsity 2011,” said the coaches. (Head Coach Jacquie Gow;
Asst. Coaches Kim Riso and Nancy Gorman; J.V. Coach Lauren Portnoy.)
The Boy’s Varsity Lacrosse Team finished their home season, sending the seniors out in style with an 11-4 victory over West Hempstead. Following the pre-game ceremony honoring the Class of 2011 from both teams, the Big Red seniors took the field in what would be their last game on J. Cameron Maiden Field.
The Big Red fell behind early after a West Hempstead goal, but seniors Kevin Nicholas and Owen Valance would not let the Rams crash the party, each scoring two goals to put the Big Red up 4-2.
With a 6-3 halftime lead, the Big Red knew it was time to close the door on West Hempstead. Rising to the occasion, the defense of senior Chris Melillo, Blaise Dennis and Ben Stone and goalie Nick Manzione shut down the Ram offense holding them scoreless in the third quarter. Meanwhile Glen Cove’s attack of seniors Nicholas, Vinny DiPaola and juniol Scott Nicolich controlled the tempo of the game.
Scoring for Glen Cove was Valance with 3 goals and 1 assist, Nicholas with 2 goals, Chris Saperstien and Dennis Ramadan each added 2 goals and an assist, Nick Pappachristou and Christian Ring each scored a goal. Nicolich had a career high 6 assists, while Manzione added 16 saves for the Big Red.
