Joe Tumbarello, age 67, and a resident of Glen Cove, qualified for the 2011 April 18 Boston Marathon by running a 3:27:35 at the 2010 Disney Marathon.
“I would like to finish in the top 10 in my age group,” said Tumbarello.
He started running in 1996, shortly after having a heart attack and having a balloon angioplasty at St. Francis Hospital. Since then he has run numerous 5K, 10K, 15K, half and full marathons including six NYC marathons.
“Training for the Boston Marathon is difficult because it involves running anywhere from 45 minutes to 3 hours during the months of December, January, February and March,” he said. “I run short distance (less than 5 miles) with my running partner, Kevin Kern, of Landing Bakery.”
“Runners sometimes need all the encouragement we can get; a honk or a wave is well appreciated,” he shared.
