Girl’s Varsity Basketball Starts Solid! The North Shore Girls Varsity Basketball Team is off to a solid start this season. The girls started their Non-League play by participating in two Holiday Basketball Tournaments. The first was the prestigious Wantagh Booster Club Tournament with some of the top teams in Nassau County. The first round saw the Vikings take on perennial power and Newsday preseason #5 in the county, Wantagh.
Led by the Christine Castiglione’s 7 first half points and ninth-grader Caroline Robertson’s first career 3 pt. goal, the girls raced out to a 34-22 lead. Using their trademark pressure defense, the girls stifled the vaunted Wantagh offense in the 3rd quarter and led 48-29 to start the 4th as they cruised to a 63-50 victory. Christine Castiglione led a balanced with her first ever double-double (11 points and 13 rebounds) and the defense was led by Nicole Scuderi and Bridget Lincoln who combined for 13 steals as the girls forced 42 turnovers in the game. In the finals the girls took on preseason #3 Lynbrook (the Nassau County runner-up last year). This was, however, their third game in a row as the girls played an exhibition game against a very physical team from Denmark in between the two games and the fatigue showed in their legs, but not in their effort. The Vikings completely controlled the pace of the game as they forced their will upon the Owls. The game, however, was a back and forth affair with the Vikings being led by Amanda Johansen (20 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 blocks) and Bridget Lincoln with 9 points. In the end, the girls came up short as they lost 62-55. In the tournament, Amanda Johansen and Erin Sheerin (15 total points and 12 total assists) were named to the All-Tournament team.
In the next tournament, the girls traveled to Manhasset to take part in the Barbara Hoffman Memorial Tournament. In the first round the Vikings played Westbury and jumped out to a 22-0 lead in the first quarter. Led by Jackie Gioia’s career high 12 points (on 4 for 4 shooting from the 3. point line), the girls cruised to a 48-28 victory. In the finals the girls took on Catholic League power St. Mary’s (NYS Final 4 team from 2010). This game was truly one for the ages and everyone in attendance would agree. This game saw two really good teams just going at each other. Led by Nicole Scuderi’s (9 points, 3 steals) 6 first half points, timely scoring from eighth-grader Alex Cantwell and Jackie Gioia’s 3 point shot at the buzzer the girls took a 39-38 lead over the Gaels to close the first half. The 3rd quarter was more of the same as the two teams entered the 4th quarter all tied at 54. The score stayed within two points the entire quarter as it was 70-68 St. Mary’s with a minute and a half to go and North Shore ball. A steal by the Gaels, however, and a long rebound on the ensuing possession led to 2 St. Mary’s lay-ups as they went up 74-68 with one minute to go en route to a 78-70 North Shore defeat. In the tournament Jackie Gioia was named to the All-Tournament team as was Amanda Johansen after just an amazing performance in the Finals. Amanda finished the Final game with the unbelievable stats of 27 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists, 6 blocks and 5 steals. After these two tournaments the girls are set to begin League play and their first League game will be featured on MSG Varsity so look for it soon, as they will not be home until January 11th after an 8 game road trip to begin the season. Come out and support the North Shore Vikings!
