The Glen Cove Pee Wee Cardinals Red beat previously undefeated Plainview on the road 27 - 14 to score a victory in the opening round of the Tier 1 Division playoffs on Saturday night.
The Cardinals dominated Plainview from the opening snap with a total team effort. Running backs Dominick Genzale and Damon Garner each had a pair of touchdowns behind an impressive offensive line led by Lorenzo Recine and Kevin Napier. Garner converted an extra point run after scoring the Cardinals’ first touchdown of the game. Mario Fischetti converted a 13-yard field goal after one of Genzale’s two touchdowns to seal the game.
The Cardinals’ defense played its strongest game of the season. Lineman Lorenzo Recine was all over the quarterback and running backs all game long. Linebacker Jack “the ripper” Alletto and Mario Fischetti had a tremendous game on defense making solid tackles all night long. Safety Dominick Genzale was in on virtually every tackle refusing to let Plainview get off a big play. The only scores Plainview were able to make against the Cardinals’ defense came after the Cardinals were up by three touchdowns allowing Plainview to pull four Cardinals defensemen.
The Cardinals then faced off against Brentwood for the NFC Championship.
The Glen Cove Pee Wee Cardinals Red lost the Tier 1 NFC Championship game in a heartbreaker to undefeated Brentwood in overtime on November 21 by the score of 27-26. The Cardinals led by Coaches Kevin Napier, Jr., Jay Genzale, Damon Garner, Lou Recine and Jessie Barnes, fought valiantly in their pursuit of the championship only to come up short by one point.
Brentwood opened the game with a 60-yard touchdown drive and converted the extra point to take a 7-0 lead into the second quarter. The Cardinals offense answered Brentwood’s opening score with a touchdown by Dominick Genzale to tie the game at 7. The teams battled back and forth the whole game. Damon Garner and Dominck Genzale each scored a pair of touchdowns behind a strong offensive line. Mario Fischetti also contributed with long runs to keep the chains moving for the Cardinals. The Cardinals finally took the lead with 1 minute in regulation on a touchdown run by Damon Garner.
The Cardinals defense had a challenging task to keep high-powered Brentwood from scoring on Brentwood’s last drive. Brentwood moved the ball down to the Cardinals 35-yard line and called a timeout with 2 seconds remaining. The Cardinals coaches and fans were stunned that there was any time left as it appears that the referees miscalculated the remaining time leaving Brentwood with one final play. Brentwood miraculously scored a touchdown on the weary Cardinals defense on that last play and subsequently converted the extra point to tie the game at 20 – 20 at the end of regulation. The Cardinals answered back in overtime with a touchdown run by Genzale, but narrowly missed the extra point conversion to take the lead 26-20. Brentwood answered with a 10-yard touchdown run and converted the extra point to win the game 27-26.
Throughout the long season, which started on Aug. 1, the Pee Wee Cardinals Red displayed an amazing amount of dedication to themselves, teammates, coaches and families. Everyone is already looking forward to next season when the Cardinals pursuit of a championship continues!
