Saturday, Nov. 6 was SoccerFest, and the first- and second-grade girls of Glen Cove Chemists enjoyed every minute of the round-robin tournament. The competition was fierce as the Green Chemists faced each division team, winning their game against Island Photography and tying both Badge Agency and A+ Signs. This was enough to place the green Glen Cove Chemists team in the division finals against the pink Island Photography team. The Chemists scored early on a brilliant drive to the goal by Camryn Kleinwaks in which she threaded the ball through the defense, finishing with a strong shot that eluded the Photography goalkeeper. Although the girls in pink fought hard, they could not overcome the defensive presence and exceptional speed of Mialani Martinez who thwarted several drives single-handedly. Caitlyn Callahan and Julianna Turcios shined on both sides of the ball, contributing on potentially game changing plays throughout the contest. Gabriella Callahan added to the offensive onslaught of shots that kept the pink team on their heals. Carolyn Fahey played terrifically in the goal, stymieing the Island Photography offense. Jane Maleady was sensational throughout the day, scoring multiple times, but none more important than the second goal for the Chemists in the finals in which she launched a missile into the top corner of the goal. This cushion gave the Chemists the confidence to close out the game and take home the girl’s SoccerFest Championship trophies! But the best moment was yet to come, as during the award ceremony, the Glen Cove Chemists girls in green were awarded the Sportsmanship trophy for demonstrating goodwill, fair play and positive attitudes throughout the regular season. On this beautiful fall day, even the bright sun couldn’t outshine the smiling, ecstatic faces of the girls in green!
