The GC Senior Red Junior Football team’s 2010 journey has come to an end. GC lost their semifinal playoff game against Brentwood 27-13. Though the score indicates a decisive victory by Brentwood, the first half of the game was typical of this GC team. A fast scoring start by GC occurred when David Perkins threw a 50-yard bomb to Yamique Webb for a TD on the first play of the game, punctuated by an extra point on a Jack Mangan pass to Chris Lent in the corner of the end zone. GC’s second TD came from HB Yamique Webb in the second quarter when Yamique took a 50-yard sweep into the end zone. Brentwood’s first TD came when a fumble, forced by GC’s powerful defense, was picked by Bentwood’s fullback who ran 40 yards for the score. Brentwood scored again in the first half, but missed the extra point and GC went into half time ahead 13-12. As the second half began it was apparent that the 17-man roster was beginning to show signs of wear. Brentwood continued their aggressive style of play through the second half by which the GC Cardinal Red had no offensive answer. Brentwood scored two additional TDs, one on a blocked punt to end the game 27-13. The season for the GC Red has been long but not without great memories. The team went 7-1-1, took first place in tier one in their division and avenged a loss in the regular season against the defending champions Rosedale to win a quarter final playoff game. A thank you for a rewarding experience and great season was offered by the coaches. A thank you to all the seniors who participated in the program over the past years, and good luck next year to the 12-year-olds coming back to continue the successful GC junior football tradition.
