The Glen Cove Pony White hosted the Lindenhurst White on Sunday, Nov. 7 for an 11:30 a.m. game.
Although they started off slow, the Cardinals won with a score of 18-14.
Lindenhurst kicked off to Glen Cove to start the game. Offense could not get going and Hayden DiPalma punted the ball.
Lindenhurst was able to quickly score a touchdown.
Although defense was tough, they scored again on their next possession and took an early lead.
This did not deter the Cardinals. Offense came back strong. After runs by Matthew Aufiero, Danny Neice (who was playing the quarterback position) and Christopher “Woody” Blissett, Aufiero scored. Although it looked good, the kick attempt by Blissett was no good. This put the score at 14-6.
Defense was strong and forced Lindenhurst to turn the ball over on downs. Although a Glen Cove fumble was recovered by Lindenhurst, the Cardinals got the ball back when Samad Hill recovered a Lindenhurst fumble. There were also numerous tackles by Jake Cirella, Jack Giovanetti, Joey Grella, Woody Blissett, Matthew Aufiero, Alex Venturino (who also had a sack and a fumble recovery) and Hill.
The Cardinals scored again on a toss from quarterback Neice to Blissett for a 75 yard touchdown. The Cardinals again attempted a 2 point conversion but it was blocked.
Sean Cunningham, who usually plays the quarterback position, was not allowed to play in the game due to a concussion. He was at the game on the side lines, lending encouragement and cheering on his team.
The score at the half was Lindenhurst 14 and Glen Cove 12.
Blissett started the second half kicking off to Lindenhurst, but the defense did not let them get far. Tackles were made by Samad Hill, Nicholas Patrichuk, Ryan Aughavin, and a sack in the backfield by Hayden DiPalma that forced Lindenhurst to punt the ball. The punt was caught by Matthew Aufiero who ran for several yards.
Playing hard defensively throughout the game were Christiano Mele, Jack Giovanetti, Cartier Funderburke, Cameron Filippone, Devron James, Brian Giovaniello, Joe Cappiello, Joe Barcellos and Matthew Potapov.
Potapov also blocked a Lindenhurst punt on the 6 yard line that led to Matthew Aufiero scoring another touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good.
Kniel Barnes and Jo JoYee did a great job blocking, allowing for Glen Cove to score.
Defense secured the win when they held Lindenhurst from scoring at the 10-yard line at the 4-minute warning.
Offense continued to play hard until the end of the game and held onto the victory. The final score was Glen Cove 18 and Lindenhurst 14.
The Ponies head to the playoffs, which are to be announced.
