I attended this year’s Glen Cove Memorial Day commemorative ceremony and parade and I must publicly ask the following question since it relates to a public event. Why wasn’t the national anthem of our great nation sung at Monument Park? And who decided that the national anthem would not be included along with the two songs that we did hear: “America the Beautiful” and “God Bless America?”
“The Star-Spangled Banner” continues to wave over the land of the free and the home of the brave. Our national anthem should have been heard on Memorial Day at Monument Park and throughout Glen Cove as a tribute to the heroic men and women who died while serving our country and as a tribute to our troops who are currently in harm’s way.
As the daughter of a Korean War veteran who died and was buried here with military honors just three months ago, I am very disappointed that I didn’t hear the national anthem of our country which, as my dad used to say, “gave us every opportunity and everything we have so make sure you take care of America.”
