Reflections On The Past Week

Mother’s Day

This past Sunday, May 13, we celebrated Mother’s Day and mothers everywhere. I am lucky enough to have had the opportunity to say “thank you” to my mom, my mother-in-law and my wife for all they do for me and my family every day. Mother’s Day is a beautiful day of appreciation and thanks. It gives us the opportunity to recognize mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds. I hope that all the mothers, grandmothers, potential mothers and all women who care for their families enjoyed a very special day and that whether it was Sunday or today, we all take a moment to say thank you to these special women.

Senior Day

On Saturday, we celebrated the 6th Annual Senior Day in our downtown Village Square. In 2007, my administration established this event to recognize the vast contributions made by this population over the years to say thank you as they are some of the city’s most valuable and active participants. This very special group of people contribute every day in our schools, community events and volunteering for numerous organizations.

Our community is fortunate to have such a vibrant and active senior population who are supported by their families, our own Glen Cove Senior Center facility and staff plus the excellent senior living facilities within our community. I was especially pleased to recognize this year’s honorees. Adrian Hersey was honored with the prestigious “Lifetime Service Award” for his extraordinary contributions over the years. In addition, the 2012 recipient of the Award for Service and Dedication to the Senior Community was Dominick Pascucci. They are truly gifts to the City of Glen Cove and I was proud to honor them.

A Good Man

On Friday, we bid a final farewell to Walter Moretto, Jr., retired Glen Cove police detective, respected member of our community and longtime friend. Walter fought a long and courageous battle with his loving family by his side. Our community was proud to come together to say goodbye to a good man, a great friend and a tremendous public servant and to thank his family for sharing him with us.
