I want to commend the Record Pilot and its editor, Matthew Piacentini, for sponsoring and moderating the Mayoral Debate on Oct. 29 between Mayor Suozzi and Paul Meli, the Republican candidate for mayor of Glen Cove.
This was a far more informative and interesting debate than the one on Channel 12 a few weeks ago, primarily because it allowed both candidates enough time to fully develop their positions, demonstrating the importance of such public exchanges. Mr. Meli did not disappoint. He appeared to be at the top of his game as he took on each question with the confidence of a candidate who has carefully studied the issues and whose solutions are solidly grounded. Mr. Piacentini guided the debate with journalistic aplomb.
To paraphrase the Syms Clothing Store tag line, “an educated consumer is our best customer,” many would agree that an informed voter is our best citizen. It is our civic responsibility to be fully informed before we vote. For those who didn’t attend the debate, I suggest you to go to the Record Pilot website and link to the debate video before choosing the man who will represent you for the next two years.
I hope this sets a precedent for future elections.
