Friday, 08 July 2011 00:00Assemblyman Michael A. Montesano (R,C,I-Glen Head) successfully passed Assembly bill 5165, which designates the Northern State Parkway as the “Purple Heart Way” to honor local military veterans who have served so valiantly for their country. The portion of the highway that has been renamed starts at the Nassau County line in the village of Lake Success, Town of North Hempstead and ends in Hauppauge in the towns of Islip and Smithtown, located in Suffolk County.
“It is truly an honor to show our deep appreciation of those who have and continue to serve our country,” said Montesano. “In an effort to demonstrate the utmost respect for those who were wounded or killed defending the freedoms we enjoy, this memorial will show that we have never forgotten how much they have sacrificed for us.”
The bill was introduced at the request of Conrad Steers, New York State Commander of the New York Military Order of the Purple Heart USA, as an appropriate memorial to those who have been wounded or killed while serving on or after April 15, 1917, with the United States military. The bipartisan legislation passed the Senate on June 20, passed the Assembly unanimously on June 21, and is now on the way to the Governor for his consideration and signature.
