Saturday, May 7, Village Square was abuzz with activity and a spirit that only senior citizens can generate. City of Glen Cove Mayor Suozzi, Deputy Mayor Maureen Basdavanos and a host of community leaders were at the Fifth Annual Senior Recognition Day—-an idea conceived five years ago by Bob Howard and endorsed by Mayor Suozzi in recognition of one of the city’s most precious assets—-senior citizens.
Everyone had the opportunity to visit with a variety of vendors, sample food and beverages from our local care facilities and enjoy a musical performance by the Senior Center Golden Voices Choral Group and Senior Pops of Long Island. Area centenarians were proudly acknowledged with a City citation and corsage.
Marge Suozzi was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2011 Senior Recognition Day Honorees were Pat Parmelee and Linda Thompson.
The weatherman’s cooperation allowed us to bask in the warmth of the sun with hundreds of seniors, their families and friends. It was a wonderful tribute in the spirit of the day due, in large part, to Mayor Suozzi’s devotion to senior citizens and the Glen Cove Senior Center.
Thanks to all who helped to make this day possible. In keeping with the dramatic increase in the aging population, we look forward to an even larger sixth annual celebration in 2012 and the opportunity to honor many more seniors and centenarians whose accomplishments have helped to shape our lives.
