Time and again I have heard the mayor state that we are experiencing one of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and indeed we are!
The disagreement comes in when I see the mayor run the city and its finances as if we were living through a booming economic period.
This disagreement and my disbelief strengthened upon finding out how the mayor is continuing to cater to his loyal power base by continuing, maybe even expanding, the number of individuals who are continuing to benefit from a very generous benefits package at the expenses of the taxpayers.
Hard to believe, and yet true! At the Dec. 28, 2010 Council meeting, they (mayor and council) unanimously voted to give non-union city employees the same benefits package that the union employees receive.
Listen to their rationale and try to make sense of it.
Even though we are going through hard economic times, we are obligated by contract to the generosity of a 100 percent, paid by the city, health benefits coverage to union employees and because we give this bounty to union employees, in order to be fair we decided to give the same to non union employees.
Furthermore, our mayor and city council voted to treat our city council persons as full time employees, even though they are not, and therefore eligible to all the benefits that the status implies; they went on and passed a resolution making the city attorney position that of an employee and (you guessed it) include that person in the list of recipients.
Fellow Glen Covers, it is abundantly clear that we, the taxpayers, are the only ones experiencing the greatest economic crisis in the last 60 years. As for our municipal entourage, they continue to be the beneficiaries of our mayor’s largess, as if that were his sworn responsibility, instead of us the taxpayers.
It is time to wake up Glen Cove and take a stand against an administration that is totally out of touch with everyday reality, the very same that we as citizens are confronted with day in and day out.
