I am writing to express an idea to change the existing structure of the mayor and city council.
The city should be divided into sections (six to eight) and each city council member should be elected to represent his section of the city. The elections for council members should be staggered years so they are running on their own credentials and will be responsible to the people that are electing them, not to the mayor.
The existing setup has caused a one-party system to run the city for a long time and the city council is not representing the residents as much as supporting the mayor’s ideas.
The mayor probably should be a four-year term, but he should run on separate years from the city council and not present a team ballot. In this small city, it’s more important that the six council members be there to represent all of us, and see that everyone’s needs are being represented.
