Friday, 15 October 2010 00:00Last Friday I found out that Kerry Catanzano had passed away. He always had a positive attitude, a willingness to pitch in and help. He was an unheralded treasure of the Glen Cove community.
My association with Kerry, like many others, was from St. Pat’s CYO basketball. Kerry ran the program for many years, getting as many local kids involved as he could. By playing in the league, he made hundreds of local children feel special each year. I watched as he opened up early on Saturday mornings and spent the majority of his day at the gym.
Kerry paid for families that couldn’t afford the fee, put together all-star games, ran buses for the children to attend college basketball games, and ran an end of year basketball party that all the kids and parents could enjoy.
During those years I witnessed someone who listened to people’s problems, who offered advice, or a helping hand. Always quick with a smile or a hug, he made you feel at home, whether you knew him for years or a few minutes.
Glen Cove will miss Kerry.
