Friday, 20 August 2010 00:00

On behalf of the officers and members of American Legion Post 336, please accept our congratulations and thanks for your beautiful office building at our famous “four corners.”

You have certainly enhanced our beloved Glen Head with a classic addition to our landscape.

We appreciate having businessmen such as you who respect our town as you do.

Letter: Assemblyman Lavine’s Police Comments

Friday, 20 August 2010 00:00

I read remarks that Assemblyman Lavine has been publishing about the proposed merger of the Nassau County Police Department’s 2nd and 6th Precincts.

There is nothing in Assemblyman Lavine’s professional background, education, experience or training that provides him with the knowledge, skill or ability to assess municipal police operations or administration.

Letter: Thank You From Judge McCord

Friday, 13 August 2010 00:00

As Supervising Judge for the City of Glen Cove, on Tuesday, Aug. 3, I had the honor and privilege to be recognized by the Glen Cove Police Department and Police Chief William Whitton at Glen Cove’s National Night Out Against Crime for the work the judiciary does to prevent crime in our community and help raise our children in a safe and healthy environment. I am proud to be honored along with Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice, whose commitment to crime prevention and safety is well-known to everyone in the county.

Letter: Responding to David Whitting

Friday, 13 August 2010 00:00

David J. Whitting wrote to the Record Pilot (Aug. 5 issue) to protest the email from the superintendent of the North Shore School District inquiring of the community whether individuals might be willing and able to contribute to a capital campaign for the schools. Mr. Whitting asks why, instead of contemplating a fund-raising campaign, the district cannot simply cut costs and live within its means.

Letter: Rave Reviews for Assemblyman Lavine

Friday, 06 August 2010 00:00

I have rave revues for the work of Assemblyman Charles Lavine. In all my dealings with him I have found him to be an honest, forthright and perceptive strategist and advocate for his constituency. There are too many examples to report in a short letter. I will provide one recent example of his outstanding work. I went to the Albany Legislature, along with other library supporters, to speak up for our beloved Sea Cliff Library and other local libraries.

Letter: John Maccarone Hall of Fame Golf Tournament

Friday, 06 August 2010 00:00
On Monday, July 26, the 22nd Annual John Maccarone Hall of Fame Golf Tournament was held at the Glen Cove Golf Course. All the money raised from this tournament goes to the John Maccarone Scholarship Fund and to date approximately $50,000 has been awarded to outstanding academic-athletic students. This year, as a result of the 2009 golf tournament revenues and the generosity of the family of the late Dr. Sidney Canarick, we awarded $6,000 in scholarships to five graduating seniors at Glen Cove High School.

Letter: SAGE Needs Your Support

Friday, 30 July 2010 00:00

Anna is 81 years old and lives alone since the death of her husband nine years ago. Her eyesight is failing from macular degeneration. Each weekday, Anna is brought to the Glen Cove Senior Center to enjoy a nutritious meal, stimulating activity and the company of friends. She would otherwise be housebound.

Letter: Forest Bookstore Article

Friday, 30 July 2010 00:00

Thank you for putting an article in the Record Pilot highlighting the plight of Forest Bookstore. I have been a patron of the bookstore since long before Tracy Aledort took ownership. A constant desire to read and the occasional need for reference books (SAT prep, foreign language dictionaries etc.), plus the very close proximity to home makes it really easy to forego the trip to Manhasset, Westbury or Garden City to pick up a book.

Letter: Deep Appreciation From the Christopoulos Family

Friday, 23 July 2010 00:00

This Saturday, July 24, our family will mark the fifth anniversary of our son’s untimely death. Many things have been done in his memory including the annual Andreas Christopoulos 5K Run/Walk, the proceeds of which benefit scholarships to graduating Glen Cove High School seniors. My family and I would like to thank the following sponsors who made it possible for us to award two scholarships and to sustain the scholarship fund: Anton Community Newspapers; “A Bronx Friend;” Assemblyman Charles Lavine; D&L Painting; the Chris Spyropoulos Family; Annette Cirillo-Bergen; Glen Cove City Democratic Committee; Glen Cove PBA; Glen Optic; Gotham T-Shirts; Losee Signs; the Manzione Family; North Shore Farms; the Bocchino Family; Flora Petakas Marinelli; St. Catherine’s Philoptochos Society; Basile Electric; the Bosworth Family; Charles of Glen Cove; Downtown Cafe; the Hatala Family; the McCarthy Family; Henry’s Confectionary; Locust Valley Bagel; Page One Restaurant; the Poloway Family; Rita’s of Glen Cove Italian Ices; and Sophia Niarchos. We would be remiss if we didn’t thank all the volunteers and participants from our extended family including: Glen Cove Police Chief William Whitton; Judge Richard J. McCord; my ‘sisters’ in Glen Cove City Hall; Legislator Diane Yatauro and my colleagues in her office; Glen Cove City Councilman Tony Jimenez; the Glen Cove School District administrators and teaching staff; members of the Glen Cove High School Class of 2001, members of the Glen Cove High School Class of 2009; and our family at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Resurrection which includes our Greek Orthodox Youth Group;  our St. Catherine’s Philoptochos philanthropic organization and our Young Adult League (YAL). We appreciate being granted permission by Glen Cove Mayor Suozzi and the City Council to hold the run and we acknowledge the patience of our neighbors during the closing of the streets along the course of the run.

Letter: Thank You From Claudia Marra

Friday, 23 July 2010 00:00

Mayor Suozzi, Francine Ferrante, Maureen Bastlavas, and all the members of the Chamber of Commerce, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the wonderful awards you gave to Luca and Max Marra in honor of their father, Mario.

Ten years ago, my husband Mario and I walked into the Old School Street deli and he looked at me and said, “You see this place? I am going to turn this place into my dream restaurant and I am going to have people eating dinner outside like they do in Italy.”
