James E. Baker

James E. “Ace” Baker, of Locust Valley, died peacefully on Dec. 15, 2009. Mr. Baker retired in 1991 from Nassau County as the deputy commissioner of General Services in charge of the Division of Purchase and Supply. He was appointed to his purchasing position by then County Executive Ralph G. Caso in Jan. 1971. During his two decades of service Mr. Baker directed and oversaw the purchasing of all County materials, equipment for such entities as the Nassau Coliseum, 19 story Medical Center, the District Court Complex and many others.

Prior to serving at Nassau County, Mr. Baker was the director of purchasing for the Town of Oyster Bay for six years and prior to that was a senior electronic buyer for Reeves Instrument Corp. in Garden City for 14 years.

Mr. Baker was a 50-year member of the Locust Valley Fire Department and served as chief of the Department from 1967 to 1969 and secretary-treasurer of the Fire District from 1970 to 1972. In addition Mr. Baker served in the U.S. Army and was later recalled to active duty as an enlisted reservist during the Korean conflict.

He served as a member of the Nassau County Republican Committee for 16 years and was a former president of the Locust Valley Republican Club.

Husband of Marion (nee Bozzello) for 57 years. Father of Linda Baker, Jeffrey E. Baker (Jessica) and the late James E. Baker, Jr. Grandfather of Thomas Lopez, Christina Lopez, Zachary, Edmund, Jennifer, James A., Jack and Liam Baker. Great-grandfather of Kayla, Thomas Jr. Olivia and Breonna Lopez. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Visiting Thursday from 7 to 9 and Friday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Whitting Funeral Home, 300 Glen Cove Ave., Glen Head. Funeral service 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment Locust Valley Cemetery. Contributions may be made to Locust Valley Fire Department, 228 Buckram Rd., Locust Valley, NY 11560.
