Obituary: Leo Israel

Leo Israel, 90, passed away July 26, 2013 peacefully in his home, after suffering a long illness. His wife of 67 years, Deborah Israel was at his side. Leo Israel was a long time resident of Glen Cove and a founding member of North Country Reform Temple. 


Israel, CPA, was the former Commissioner of Finance in Glen Cove from 1976-1980. He was also involved in various City Council positions during his 57 years living on Henry Drive in Glen Cove. 


 Israel had a long industrious career as the founding Partner of Leo Israel & Co. a CPA firm in Valley Stream, which remains a successful accounting firm today. 


After serving as a sergeant in the US Army, Israel attended City College of NY, graduated Cum Laude and went on to receive his MA from Columbia University in 1954. Israel taught accounting as a Professor of Accounting, Nassau Community College in Garden City. He was a member of the Elks and a very active member of American Radio Relay League.

Israel would remain a ham radio operator long into his retirement connecting with ham radio operators around the world using the call letters W2MNB. 


Leo Israel married his wife Deborah in 1945 and is survived by her, along with their four sons, Fred, Steve, Michael and David. Michael and his family currently reside in Glen Cove and he serves as Assistant Superintendent in the Glen Cove School District. 


Leo Israel is also beloved by his nine grandchildren Samantha, Isa, Jake, Harrison, Sam, Sarah, Blake, William and Daniel, and daughters-in-law Marsee, Michele, and Lucretia.  

Services were held at Gutterman’s Funeral Home 8000 Jericho Road, Woodbury, NY.
