James J. Capozzi, of Glen Cove, died on Aug. 23, 2009 at age 79. He was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus James Norton Council and was inducted into the Glen Cove Hall of Fame. He was a professional umpire who graduated from Bill McGowan’s School for Umpires in March of 1949 in Cocoa, FL. Bill McGowan was the senior umpire of both major leagues and Al Somers was his chief instructor with the Pacific Coast League along with Augie Donatelli and Marty Vogel to mention a few. He was a minor league umpire until he was called for duty during the Korean War and served in the Army where he became a mess sergeant and cooked for the Army’s officers. He was a proud veteran who always kept the men and woman in his heart who gave their lives to our country in Korea and every war during his entire lifetime.
When he came home from Korea he married his high school sweetheart Rose D’Ambrini in 1953 and lived his entire lifetime in the city he loved, Glen Cove.
Husband of Rose. Father of Joseph (Joyce), James J. Jr. and the late Michael (Carol). Brother of Amelia “Dolly” (Charles), John (Theresa), the late Jerry, Rocco, Dominic and Louis. Grandfather of Michael and Lauren. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visiting held at Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Mass held at the Church of St. Rocco.
