Obituary: Joseph W. Cappiello

Joseph W. Cappiello, of Glen Cove, died peacefully at home on July 29, 2009 at age 89. Born July 22, 1920 in New York City, he and his family, parents Anthony and Angelina (nee Suozzi) Cappiello moved to “The Orchard” in Glen Cove when he was a young child. He became a lifelong resident of Glen Cove. Joseph went to St. Patrick’s Parochial School and graduated from Glen Cove High School in 1939. He was an honored WWII Army Air Corps veteran who served on Tinian Island in the South Pacific during the Enola Gay’s historic mission to Japan. He was the recipient of the American Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal. He was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus James Norton Council and Sons of Italy Loggia 1016.

Husband of the late Lucretia (nee Gambino). Father of Anthony (Debra and the late Patricia), Jo-Ann Meli (Paul), James (Jeanne), Karen Truzzolino (Robert) and Marylu Loria (Michael). Brother of Lucy Bellissimo (Angelo), Angeline Manganiello (Louis), Michael (Mary) and predeceased by Anna Zuccala (Tony), Rose Simoneschi (John) and Mildred Silipo (August). Grandfather of 14 and great-grandfather of three. Also survived by aunts, uncle, nieces, nephews, cousins, godchildren and friends. Arrangements were made by the Funeral Home of Dodge-Thomas, Glen Cove. Mass at the Church of St. Rocco. Interment Holy Rood Cemetery.
