Obituary: Jeanne Chalaire

Jeanne Chalaire
Jeanne Hitt Chalaire was born in Columbus, OH, in 1925, grew up in Westerville, OH, with her three siblings, took courses in fashion design and advertising in Detroit and then moved to New York City as a fashion advertising illustrator. She went on to become a nurse/doctor’s assistant for many years and then became the revered teacher/director/owner of the Village Pre-School in Sea Cliff for 25 years.

Jeanne was a woman who displayed a gift for creating musical and visually artistic beauty, a woman of uncompromising honesty and intelligence and a woman who possessed an innate ability to touch people’s lives when they were most in need. The extraordinary qualities that distinguished Jeanne as an educator transcended into her personal life. As a wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend, she had a profound effect on all those whose lives she touched. To each relationship, whether it be with an adult, or a child of 3, she brought dignity, intelligence, understanding, compassion, creativity, wonder, beauty and grace. She allowed all who touched her life to be appreciated and valued for who they were and, in so doing, fostered and encouraged personal growth, both in herself and in those surrounding her.

Jeanne reveled in the accomplishments of her Pre-School “alumni” as they grew to be young adults with children of their own and took tremendous pride in knowing that she was, in some way, a small part of the fine people they had grown to be.

Sadly, this loving and multi-talented woman passed away, of complications from Alzheimers disease, on July 15, 2010 in Hilo, HI, where she lived for the last 15 years. She is survived by her two daughters, Darien Chalaire Morris (Lyle Morris) of Keaau, HI, and Deirdre Chalaire Humphrey of Orient, NY; a brother William Hitt of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Phillip, Ansje, Jenna, Ian and Austen; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Aug. 28 at the Puna Congregational Church in Keaau, HI. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Jeanne’s name be made to The Alzheimers Association of Hilo - Alzheimers Association,1055 Kinoole St., Suite 103, Hilo, HI 96720.
