Fanny C. Luke of Locust Valley and Manhattan died on Oct.16, 2014, at age 91. Fanny was born in Boston in 1923, a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Louis Curtis, formerly of Chestnut Hill and Manchester, Mass. She was married in 1955 and is survived by her devoted husband David L. Luke, III, her sisters Polly, Kay, and Laura, many nieces, nephews, and other equally devoted family members. She graduated from the Westover School in 1941. In 1943 she joined the U.S. Navy Waves, and after training, she was involved in the final modification of combat aircraft for U.S. Naval Forces in the Pacific Theatre, including the very planes which the man she later married was then flying in combat. She attended Radcliff College, receiving a B.A. in 1951. She worked briefly for Houghton, Mifflin and for Harvard University, and then moved to New York. She devoted nearly 12 years to teaching young children at the Episcopal School. She was active in her church in Locust Valley. Private burial in the Locust Valley Cemetery; a memorial service was held at St. John’s of Lattingtown, Locust Valley. Rose A. Hard-Gamble, of Locust Valley, died on Oct. 12, 2014, at age 102. Loving mother of Douglas and William. Sister of Anthony. Proud grandmother of four, great-grandmother of one. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was an avid bowler and attended many national bowling conventions. She bowled into her 90s and worked into her 90s. Erik A. Eckes of Flushing died on Oct 9, 2014, at age 47. Loving father of Alexandria of Glen Cove, Erik Jr.,and Victoria. Dear uncle of Christina, Johnny and Joey. Companion of Angelica. He was an extremely kind, generous, warmhearted, loving person. He had the ability to make anyone laugh, to make any room light up. When a friend was homeless, in need or struggling he welcomed them into his home with a warm heart and a place for them to lay their heads. He loved animals, and would give his last dollar to feed the stray in the neighborhood before he would feed himself. During the cold winters, at Christmas time, he would take his children out to help deliver winter blankets to the homeless people on the streets of Flushing, Queens.
