Melvin Schachter, of Glen Head, NY, passed away on Aug. 31, 2012, at age 88, after a courageous battle with cancer. Longtime employee of Grumman Aerospace. Beloved husband of Vivian. Loving father of Saul, Marjorie (Richard Geismar), and Louise. Adored “Pop-Pop” of Jenny.

Mr. Schachter worked on Grumman’s Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) that landed on the moon with Neil Armstrong on July 21, 1969. The family joke was it was named after Mr. Schachter because LEM spelled backwards is...

Obituary: Frederic (Fred) C.J. Smith

Frederic (Fred) C.J. Smith, outstanding Long Island educator and coach, died on September 1, 2012 in Wilmington, NC, where he retired to a life of golf and good friends.

Fred was born August 15, 1937, a son of Mildred Sujeski Smith and Victor A. Smith. His athletic interests and talents were demonstrated in his home community of Glen Cove on both town and school teams. While lettering in three sports at Glen Cove High School, he decided to develop his passion for sports into a career. He earned a BS in Physical Education at Cortland State, now SUNY Cortland, and participated in both football and track. He later earned a Masters in Guidance from Hofstra University.

Obituary: Robert I. Kasindorf

Robert (Bob) I. Kasindorf, resident of Glen Cove for over 60 years, died peacefully on Aug. 22 in the in the arms of his family. He was 85 years old.

He was born on Jan. 9, 1927, in The Bronx, NY, son of the late Albert Kasindorf and Mary Robinson Kasindorf and brother of Lawrence Kasindorf. After returning from WWII, serving in the Army Air Force, he met and married his wife of 42 years, the late Roslyn Bottenstein. As a young man sailing out of City Island, he sighted Glen Cove from the water and at that moment decided that Glen Cove was the place he wanted to raise his family.
