George D. Hegeman, Sr. was born on a farm in Glen Head, NY. Since 2006 he lived at Bell Trace Retirement Center, Bloomington, Indiana. He passed away on Sept. 9. A graduate (1933) of Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, he made his home in Glen Head. He was technical director of the X-ray Division of Powers-Chemco for 39 years. He was preceded in death by Bonnie Blair, his wife of 69 years, who passed away in 2006. He is survived by his children George Jr. (Sally) and Betsy (Michael); grandchildren Susan (Phil), Adrian (Erika) and Sarah, and great-grandchildren, Owen, Nadia, Sylvia and Ramona. Phyllis Sirota died in Miami on Oct. 7, at age 88, after a long illness. Born Phyllis Joy Sharron in Philadelphia in 1923, she was raised in Brooklyn, and graduated from James Madison High School and Brooklyn College. In 1942, she married Harry Sirota, whom she met before the war at Camp Mikan, a Jewish Federation summer camp in Arden, NY, and the two moved to Gainesville, FL where she taught elementary school while he underwent training in the Army Air Force. When he shipped out to North Africa, she returned to New York City where, after the war, they started a family, moving to Glen Cove in 1953. Phyllis received her master’s degree in library science from C. W. Post College of Long Island University and worked for many years as a school librarian in the Glen Cove and Bellmore schools.
John Koloski Sr, of Bayville, formerly from Sea Cliff, and before that Glenwood Landing, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 4, at the home of his loving and caring daughter, Diane Symanski, and surrounded by his loving family. He was 95. John was a devoted husband and family man. He was predeceased by his wives, Edna Koloski (nee Famalette), and Helen Koloski (nee Reynolds). He is survived by his loving children, Diane Symanski and her husband Mike of Bayville, NY; Douglas Koloski and his wife Janet of Red Bank, NJ; and John Koloski, Jr, and his wife Robin of Graysville, PA, eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. John was a graduate of Glen Cove High School, and a loyal employee of Grumman Aircraft with a career for 45 years in the human resources dept. John was the business manager and assistant coach of the famous Grumman Yankees, and the head coach of the infamous Mom Longo’s softball team of Sea Cliff. He was an extremely sincere man, and had an exceptional personality with a profound sense of humor enjoyed by many. Interment St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Brookville, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to Bayville Fire Company, 258 Bayville Ave., Bayville, NY 11709 for all their love and support they have given to the family. He will be sadly missed but never forgotten.
Douglas P. Fletcher of Glen Cove died on Oct. 4, 2012. Beloved husband of the late Annette. Loving father of Douglas, Jr. (Kathy), Christine Balchunas (James), the late Karen Zacharis and the late Mark. Claire Seligman Howard died on Oct. 1, 2012 at the age of 86. Claire will be remembered for her work as a reading specialist in The North Shore School System and for her work with The League of Women Voters and Glen Cove politics. Claire was the wife of the late Robert Howard who died on Sept. 5, 2012. Claire is survived by her two daughters, Randi Fitzpatrick and Jill Howard, and their respective husbands, Tom Fitzpatrick and Chris Burchsted. The celebration of Bob Howard’s life, planned for 11 a.m., Oct. 13, 2012 at Page One, will be expanded to include guests who wish to speak about Claire’s life.
Edward Martin, of The Villages, FL, died on September 29, 2012, at the age of 88. Formerly of Glen Head and Sea Cliff. Beloved husband of the late Joan F. Martin and devoted brother of the late Dorothy K. Martin. Loving father of Kathy (Andrew), Edward (Cathy) and Eric. Beloved grandfather of Brian, Michael, Julia and Tommy. Loving companion of Carolyn Steinbeck. Passionate American, Yankees fan and West Point football supporter. Former semi-pro pitcher in Glen Cove and Sea Cliff in the 1940s and 1950s. Had professional tryouts with both the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. Graduate of CW Post College. Lifetime employee of Long Island Lighting Company. Sophie Niforos, formerly of Bayville, died on September 27, 2012, at age 88. Beloved wife of the late George. Loving mother of James (Joseph Sheehan) and Maria Conley (David Boswell). Sophie was the wife of the late George Niforos; together, they helped to found the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Resurrection. Joan L. Ajamian of Sea Cliff died on September 27, 2012. She was the 2009 recipient of the Whitecap Award. Joan was instrumental in establishing the Mutual Concerns of Sea Cliff. She also spearheaded the NSHS nutrition committee and served as a faithful member of the board of the United Methodist Church of Sea Cliff.
