Elsie Weyland, of Glen Head, formerly of Greenvale, died on Aug. 29, 2009 at the age of 90. Sister of the late Stephan C. Weyland, Ann W. Smith and Frank Weyland. Shirley L. Fertig (nee Austin) died on Aug. 26, 2009 at the age of 85. She was a lifelong resident of Sea Cliff. Wife of Tony for 66 years. Mother of Toni Ann, Bonnie, Craig and the late Scott. Grandmother of five and great-grandmother of four. Shirley was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and served many years in the Altar Guild and also many other functions of the church. James J. Capozzi, of Glen Cove, died on Aug. 23, 2009 at age 79. He was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus James Norton Council and was inducted into the Glen Cove Hall of Fame. He was a professional umpire who graduated from Bill McGowan’s School for Umpires in March of 1949 in Cocoa, FL. Bill McGowan was the senior umpire of both major leagues and Al Somers was his chief instructor with the Pacific Coast League along with Augie Donatelli and Marty Vogel to mention a few. He was a minor league umpire until he was called for duty during the Korean War and served in the Army where he became a mess sergeant and cooked for the Army’s officers. He was a proud veteran who always kept the men and woman in his heart who gave their lives to our country in Korea and every war during his entire lifetime.
When he came home from Korea he married his high school sweetheart Rose D’Ambrini in 1953 and lived his entire lifetime in the city he loved, Glen Cove.
Husband of Rose. Father of Joseph (Joyce), James J. Jr. and the late Michael (Carol). Brother of Amelia “Dolly” (Charles), John (Theresa), the late Jerry, Rocco, Dominic and Louis. Eleanor Darlington Trevor , of Paul Smiths, NY, formerly of Locust Valley and Manhattan, died on Aug. 19, 2009 at age 87. Wife of the late Bronson. Frank P. Carbonara, husband of Frances Carbonara for 54 years, died on Aug. 19 of complications following heart surgery. He was a cellist, WWII veteran and graduate of Columbia and Teachers College.
Frank loved classical music, opera and teaching. He was a popular teacher for 35 years, 31 of which were spent in the Roslyn Public Schools. He is remembered fondly by many students. After retirement, Frank taught music appreciation in Adult Ed at local colleges, libraries and public functions. For many years, Frank taught at the Hutton House Lectures at C.W. Post College.
He is survived by his loving wife Fran; sons, Daniel (Susan), David (Natalie), Nicholas; and four grandchildren. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. William W. Ayers
William W. Ayers, of Old Brookville, died on Aug. 19, 2009 at age 59. Son of the late Barbara and William. Brother of Jeffrey (Ellen) and the late Barbara Lisanne. Uncle of Alexandra and Charlotte. He was a Vietnam veteran, U.S. Marine Corp. and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was chief surgical resident, Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn and chief triage officer, Nassau County Medical Center. He was a talented surgeon who helped many people. Services are private.
