Obituary: Oldrich Holubar

Oldrich Holubar, age 79, died on July 3 after a long battle with cardiac complications. Having lived for 40 years in Glen Cove and a lifelong career in advertising design, he and his wife moved to Alexandria, Virginia upon their retirement five years ago. One of his greatest personal accomplishments was being one of the designers of the Czech Chapel in the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. He continued his interest in the arts and his paintings were accepted into many juried competitions. Beloved husband of Margarete, with whom he recently celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary, he is survived by five children; daughter, Barbara Berry of North Carolina, sons, Martin of Georgia, Robert and John of Virginia and Matthew of New York, six grandchildren and many devoted friends. A Funeral Mass is to be held at noon on Friday, July 17 at St. Patrick’s Church in Glen Cove. In lieu of flowers Oldrich would have preferred that everyone perform a random act of kindness.

Catherine Caldari, formerly of Deer Park, died on July 3, 2009. Wife of the late Jerry Caldari. She is survived by her daughter Ann Russo and her husband Frank and her son Jerry Caldari and his wife Laura. She was predeceased by her daughter Palma Sabbatino. Grandmother of Stephan Russo, Matthew Sabbatino and his wife Katie, Craig Sabbatino, Katie Russo, Jillian Russo, Joseph Caldari, and Nick Caldari. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Funeral Mass at St. Boniface Church. Interment Pinelawn Memorial Park.

Rose M. Zulli, of Glen Cove, formerly of Wantagh, died on July 2, 2009. Wife of Dominick. Mother of Denise (Joseph) Basile, Roseanne and the late Caryl (Donald) Lunde. Grandmother of Randi, Frankie, Brian and the late Jason. Great-grandmother of Christopher. Religious services were held at the McLaughlin Kramer Megiel Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Obituary: Alvira T. Sprague

Alvira T. Sprague, formerly of Locust Valley and Glen Cove., died very peacefully on June 26, 2009. Widow of the late Walter R. Sprague. The family believes she may have been the oldest living Girl Scout, joining in 1920 and achieving Golden Eaglette in 1928. She would have been 103 years old on Aug. 21. She is survived by son Richard (Denise); daughter Dr. Carol Savage (Steven); grandchildren Richie, 1st Lt. Carolyn and 1st Lt. Michael Blue, Matthew, Lcpl. Andrew; and great-grandson Connor and his mother, Grace. Visiting and service at the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Interment Locust Valley Cemetery.

 

Obituary: Horace D. Thompso

Horace D. Thompson, of Glenwood Landing, formerly of Locust Valley, died on June 26, 2009 at age 84. A WWII Army veteran, he was past commander of American Legion Post 962 Locust Valley and past president of British Veterans of LI. Brother of Marie E. Also survived by several cousins in New England and the U.K. Visiting at the Funeral Home of Dodge-Thomas, Glen Cove. Service at St. John’s of Lattingtown. Obituary: Donald R. Thompson

Donald Thompson, resident of Sea Cliff since 1947, died June 25, 2009 at age 94. He was a math teacher and track coach at North Shore High School until his retirement in 1975. Donald grew up in Valhalla, NY. He attended Furman University and Columbia University where he majored in education. He served in the Army Air Corp during WWII; he was a sergeant working in enlistment and classification of recruits.

 

Obituary: Margaret P. Palmer

Margaret P. Palmer, of Mill Neck, died on June 19, 2009 at age 91. Wife of the late Edward L. Mother of Edward P. of Bainbridge Island, WA, and Jane Palmer Morrison of Boulder, CO. Grandmother of Edward L. II, Alexandra P. and Benjamin Edward Morrison. Born in Brooklyn in 1917, Peggy graduated from Pembroke College in 1938. She and her husband, Ed, moved to Glen Cove in 1947, built a house in Brookville in 1953 and relocated to Mill Neck in 1963. Peggy volunteered at Glen Cove Community Hospital, participated annually at the St. John’s of Lattingtown fair and loved her weekly tennis games. She raised two wonderful children and was a loving partner to Ed for 66 years until he died in 2006. Much of her time was spent traveling worldwide with Ed, an executive of Citibank, meeting dignitaries and hosting parties. She will be fondly remembered for her loving nature and radiant smile. Arrangements were made by the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Service at St. John’s of Lattingtown on July 28 at 11 a.m. Interment private.

 

 

Obituary: Frederick B. Spencer

Frederick B. Spencer passed away peacefully on May 4, 2009 in Rexford, NY, at the age 92. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Kathleen (Kay); two children, Gail Chase (Larry) and Frederick Jr. (Darlene); and four grandchildren. He was born and raised in Brooklyn’s Park Slope, served in WWII with the Army Air Corps, then moved to Glen Head (and later Old Brookville) to raise his family. He worked as a stock specialist and owned a seat on the American Stock Exchange. He retired in 1979 and moved to Whispering Pines, NC, where he and Kay spent 25 active, healthy, and happy years. His final years were spent in upstate New York. Like his father, he loved the ocean and golf, which he continued to play up to age 91. He will be interred in Brooklyn’s Greenwood Cemetery at a later date.
