Albert Anthony Sommerfeld of Greenvale, 93, passed away on April 20 after a long illness. He was born on June 3, 1920 in Brooklyn. He graduated from Jamaica High School in 1938 and attended Queens College. He left college to join the Navy in August 1941. While training in San Diego, he was fortunate to walk away from a plane crash. During World War II, he was a pilot with the famous “Jumpin’ Joe Clifton’s” Carrier Air Group 12 squadron, flying both the Dauntless and the Helldiver dive bombers. He spent about a year in the Pacific theater on the USS Saratoga and participated in over 42 air strikes against enemy bases.
John Head, a generous, genuine, and loving soul, departed this life on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the age of 69. Known as “The Professor” to his classmates growing up, John was a repetitious honor student in Glen Cove’s schools and often blew people away with his academic accomplishments and athletic abilities, lettering in football, wrestling, and track. John served in the United States Air Force as a radar repair technician and weapons control specialist. As an active duty airman for four years during the Vietnam War, John served in Texas, Colorado, California, and Okinawa, Japan as well as an additional two years as an inactive reservist, ultimately receiving an honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant. John attended colleges in Wisconsin and California before graduating from the City College of New York with a BS in computer science. Tremendous success followed working as a computer consultant, advisor, and specialist, programming in different languages, with various software, and across many platforms to analyze data and produce solutions for many major corporations. John was a man of vast knowledge and was surrounded by loving family and friends from all walks of life who adored him.
John Head is preceded in death by his parents William and Mamie Head, his sister Darlene, and her daughter Fabianne Curtis, his brother Chester, and his nephew Jason Figueroa. John leaves to celebrate his extraordinary life his daughters Amanda and Whitney Head, his sisters Deborah Head and Leatrice Head (Linda), his brothers William Jr. (Cheryl), Robert Sr., and Warren, his nieces Natalie Overby (James) and Mamie Dionne (Josh), his nephew Michael McClendon, Robert Head Jr., and a host of relatives and friends.

Nicholas John Peluso, 81, of Durham, NC, died April 18 after a long and courageously fought illness. Nick will be missed by his loving wife of 60 years, Joan Platt Peluso, his children John (Julie), Marjorie, Marie, Michael (MJ), Nora and Nicholas Jr., his brother Dominic and the rest of his family in New York, and dear friends and honorable family members Chip Sassa, Mari Bright, Fran and Lee Ruckert, Gina Trianfo and Donna Ryan.
Nick’s large and extended family brought the greatest happiness to his life. “Papa Nick” enjoyed creating handmade wooden toys and gifts for everyone, but especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren Nicole (Kerry), Keller and Kace; Chris (Dawn), Matthew, Elizabeth and Benjamin; Brian (Manda), Michael (Nickie), Thomas (Jessica), Saylor and Charlotte; Lisa, Jaclyn and Katelyn.
