Wayne DeWall, of Glen Cove, formerly of Flushing, died on July 18, 2010 at age 50. He was a master auto mechanic. Father of Elijah. Brother of Courtney, Clayton, (twin) Wendy and Marlene. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Reposed at the Funeral Home of Dodge-Thomas, Glen Cove. Service and interment to be held at a later date.
John “Jack” Kinsella, born March 31, 1932 in Brooklyn, lived in Glen Cove for most of his life, died July 11, 2010 in Houston, TX. He is survived by his beloved wife Eileen Lavery Kinsella and his three children, John Kinsella (Rocio), Theresa Haaksman (Aart) and Kathy Keys (Roger); his five grandchildren, Amara Haaksman, John and Kaitlin Keys and Andy and Kelly Kinsella; his brother James Kinsella (Anna) and sister Jean Marie Darien (Edward); brothers-in-law, Terry Sucharski (Steve) and Joseph Lavery (Peggy). He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Catherine Kinsella and brother-in-law Charles Lavery.
Joseph V. McCarthy, 80, of Ameila Island, formerly of Locust Valley and Glen Cove, died on June 27, 2010. Husband of Antoinette for 60 years. Father of Joseph, Kevin (Barbara), Stephen (Viviana), Antoinette, Joanne, James, Deidre (Mitchell), Eugene and the late Matthew. Grandfather of Benjamin, Jeffrey, Christopher, Stephanie, Jennifer, Christine, Kathleen and Nicole. Brother of Catherine Andreoli. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Arrangements were made by the Oyster Bay Funeral Home. Memorial Mass at St. Gertrude RC Church. Interment Locust Valley Cemetery. Julian H. Mates
Julian H. Mates, of Glen Cove, died on July 17, 2010 at age 83. He was a celebrated scholar of the American Musical Theatre, founder of the School of Visual and Performing Arts at the C.W. Post Campus. Doctor Mates was a professor of English at Hofstra and then at C.W. Post for close to 50 years. He graduated from Brooklyn College in 1949 and earned a doctorate from Columbia University in 1959. He published numerous academic articles and books, including The American Musical Stage before 1800. He served in the Navy during WWII.
He is survived by his wife Barbara, chair of the Media Arts Department at C.W. Post; daughters, Karen of Berkeley, CA (Margit) and Jessica of Manhattan and son Ethan of Los Angeles, CA. Grandfather of Amin, Xaimara and Elijah.
Arrangments made by Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home, Glen Cove. Interment private. A memorial service will be held on the C.W. Post Campus in the fall.
Mary Ann Garone-LaBagh
Mary LaBagh, 95, a longtime resident of Glen Cove, passed away on July 15 at Glen Cove Hospital. She was born in Brooklyn on Sept. 27, 1914, the eldest daughter of the late Michael and Teresa Garone. She was predeceased by her three siblings, John Garone, Patrick Garone and Marion Garone-Stemcosky.
Edward John Mullen Jr.
Edward John Mullen Jr., of Greenvale, died on July 15, 2010. Husband of Erin. Father of Bernadette, Edward III, Eric and Evan. Son of Edward Sr. and Christine Goodfellow. Brother of James, Jennifer Goodfellow, Joseph, Marie, Brendan, Maura and Patrick. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Ruth Miklas. Arrangements were made by the Whitting Funeral Home, Glen Head. Samuel Underhill Mitchell
Samuel Underhill Mitchell, lifetime resident of East Williston, died on July 12, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mr. Mitchell was born on Aug. 27, 1931, the only child of Myron Colyer Mitchell and Alice Jackson Underhill, two of Long Island’s early settler families. He was a direct descendant of Captain John Underhill who came to America in 1630 aboard the Winthrop Fleet. He spent much of his childhood on the Underhill farm in Jericho where his great-grandfather raised cattle and grew potatoes.
