John N. Mitchell, 71, lovingly known as Jac, raised in Glen Cove, resided in Ft. Worth, TX, and retired in Venice, FL, passed away peacefully on Jan. 27, 2011, surrounded by family and friends. Jac was a loving father, spouse and friend, who enjoyed dancing, sailing, fishing, and riding his motorcycle. He was a U.S. Marine veteran. Jac attended TCU and was a brother of Sigma Chi fraternity. He was employed in the insurance industry and law enforcement.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Volpe; his four daughters, Jackie Mitchell, Kristi Webb, Tricia Brewster and Kerry Mitchell; three granddaughters, Kamille, Madison and Hannah Webb; and two grandsons, Ryan and Kyle Brewster. Dr. Evelyn E. Steger, once described by The New York Times as “A Force of Nature,” died in her waterfront Glen Cove home on Jan. 29, 2011 at the age of 93. Born in 1917 in Bellingham, WA, Evelyn May Ecker was the third child of rugged frontier parents. She was a child of the Great Depression and suffered with her family through periods of harsh austerity that both toughened and enlightened her on life’s vicissitudes. She graduated from Western Washington Normal School (now Western Washington University) in 1935 and began a career as an English literature teacher.
