Marjorie (Midge) Maple, of Sea Cliff, passed away on April 27, 2011 at the age of 95. She had fought a courageous struggle with cardiac illness over the past three months and died at her home.
Marjorie was born in Pennington, NJ, in1915. She graduated from the New Jersey State Teachers College in Trenton, NJ, in 1938, and later received her master’s degree in education from NYU in 1952. She lived and worked most of her adult life in Sea Cliff and taught physical education at both North Shore Elementary School, and then for many years at North Shore High School. Throughout her career as a teacher, she was actively involved in a variety of student activities, including as a coach for women’s sports teams. She was a role model for positive living for all those who knew her. She lived an active, independent and full life to the end, and greatly enjoyed traveling, meeting the peoples and cultures of the world, and enthusiastically engaging in a number of outdoor activities. Over her life she took many camping and biking tours across different parts of the U.S., Canada, Europe and other parts of the world. She was an avid skier, photographer and hiker. She possessed a life-long love of nature and enjoyed the many sights and creatures of the world. Other joys included visiting family, playing cards or sports with friends, attending Mets baseball games, plays, musical shows and community fairs or events. She enthusiastically followed the lives of those in her family and she will be greatly missed by those in her extended family as well as by everyone who knew her.

Joseph A. Scarfo, of Glen Cove, died on May 1, 2011 at age 89. Husband of Carmela. Father of RoseMary Maneri (Mark) and Joann. Son of the late John and Rose. Brother of the late Angelina Stranieri, Concetta Gallo, Anthony and John. Grandfather of Michael and Samantha. Uncle of many nieces and nephews. He was a WWII veteran of Timberwolf 413th Company K Division, a member of the Paralyzed Veterans of America, American Legion of Glen Cove and the Cinquefrondese Society. Elizabeth Ann Travatello (nee Sigismondi)), 93, of Glen Cove, formerly of Astoria, died on May 6, 2011. Beloved mother of Salvatore (Marcia) and the late Gary (Marianne (Mark) Anderson. Devoted grandmother of Lisa (Brandon) Curran and Robert (Patricia). Loving great-grandmother of Briana, Christian, Connor and Patrick.
