Glen Cove resident Eva Casale is probably one of the fittest human beings you will ever meet. The long distance runner has competed in the New York City Marathon five times and last September ran a 100 mile event from Jones Beach to Oyster Bay to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. On July 7 she’ll participate in the 7-7-7 Challenge, running seven marathons in seven days to raise money for the organization.
“I actually came up with the name of the 7-7-7 Challenge myself because I’ll start on July 7 and run seven marathons for seven straight days,” said Casale. “Each day I’ll be in a different community on Long Island and run a 26.2 mile course to help raise money for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which is an organization that I strongly believe in.”
Casale, who has been an active runner for more than 30 years, first got involved with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in 2007. She joined the organization Team In Training (TNT) and served as a coach for the group. Each year she has put together and participated in a unique event to help raise money for the LLS.
“Through this group I’ve met a lot of people with blood cancer diseases and with the money raised through these events it goes towards research studies and that means more lives saved,” said Casale. “I believe in this organization and I believe in the cause.”
Her first 7-7-7 Challenge event will take place in Happauge on Monday, July 7. On Tuesday she will be in Sayville, on Wednesday in Farmingdale, on Thursday in Babylon and Friday in Long Beach. For the last two days of the Challenge she will run 26.2 mile courses through Massapequa and Glen Cove ending up at the Downtown Cafe at 2 p.m. on Sunday for a post celebration. She will begin her courses at 2 p.m. during the weekdays and 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. She will run a total distance of 183 miles for the whole week.
During the beginning of each of her races, Casale will start out with what she calls a “mission moment.”
“The mission moment is basically for who I’m running for that day. I’ll dedicate each race towards a different type of blood cancer and in memory of someone who was lost to that cancer.”
Participants are welcome to join Casale in her marathon runs but she encourages those who not full fledged marathoners to join her after the 19 mile markers. Their is a suggested donation of $50 for all participants and every runner will receive a medal and free t-shirt after the marathon is completed.
How will the hardcore runner prepare for her seven day, 183 mile marathon event?
“My plan is to run at an even pace each day in order to hold my energy level throughout the week. I will take plenty of water, Gatorade and energy gel packs with me in order to stay hydrated and eat carbohydrates and protein before the start of the marathons.”
