Many in the Glen Cove community gathered on Monday, Dec. 23 to thank Mayor Ralph Suozzi at his last meeting as mayor. Suozzi began the night by joining his wife and children in front of the American flag to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The audience chuckled quietly as Suozzi playfully took off his son’s hat.
After the Pledge, Glen Cove High School Select Chorale, directed by Edward Norris, sang “The Star Spangled Banner.” Supportive family and friends cheered loudly as the last few notes rang out.
Suozzi proceeded to thank one councilman in particular – Tony Jimenez – with a plaque of gratitude for his years of commitment to Glen Cove veterans, youth, and emergency service members. Suozzi declared him the longest-serving councilman in Glen Cove.
Along with Jimenez and the Select Chorale, the Glen Cove Midget Cardinals Football/Cheerleading team gathered to celebrate their undefeated season as the 2013 Nassau/Suffolk Football Champions. Suozzi called up team members individually to shake hands and congratulate each with his or her own award of recognition. Coaches stood alongside the mayor, “rooting on the team victory” with high-fives and big smiles.
One player handed Suozzi a Glen Cove football shirt, to make him a part of their team as well. The cheerleaders gave one last rousing cheer, closing the season for Suozzi and the footballers.
