When Larry Met Louise

Glen Cove couple celebrates 70 years of marriage

A couple from Glen Cove recently reached a remarkable milestone, celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary. Larry and Louise Graziose married on Jan. 20, 1943, and are still happily together all these years later.

“We do everything together,” says Larry. “We work together, and always did, (and will) until our dying day.”

The couple still lives in their own home and are both relatively active and independent. Larry, at age 92, still plays golf two to three days a week and takes mile-long walks on a regular basis when the weather is good. Louise, age 89, still cooks and keeps active with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Larry grew up in Greenvale and is one of 17 siblings; Louise, 89, who was born and raised in Glen Cove, is one of eight.  The couple has seven grandsons and nine great-grandchildren.

“They constantly have support from family,” says their daughter Joan Schiller, indicating that could play a role in their longevity.

The couple met through their siblings; Louise’s sister married Larry’s brother. They were married right after Larry, a World War II veteran, returned from the service. They settled in their home in Glen Cove and never left. Their children and grandchildren have also stayed near.

Joan, who lives down the street from her parents, says her father makes the “best cup of coffee” and has it ready for her at 8 a.m. every day.

“They worked very, very hard, not wealthy, always struggling,” says Joan. “And believe me, that’s what made their survival. They always strived for something better; they just lived for each other and to raise a family.”

Larry and Louise both agree that hard work and family have been important aspects of their lives.

“Don’t look back, look forward,” says Larry. “ That’s my idea.”
