As we approach the new year and start thinking about resolutions and life goals, try this one: still be skiing when you are 93 years old. In Memoirs of a Geriatric Ski Bum, we learn that this is the goal of author Stanley Hirsch of Sea Cliff. And at the time of the new book’s printing, he was just 9 years away.
In the prologue of this memoir about a love affair with skiing, Hirsch tells his readers that, having found a passion for skiing at age 45, he felt the need to make up for lost time and has been on the slopes 1,500 days since then.
Memoirs of a Geriatric Ski Bum recounts Hirsch’s 39 years of skiing around the globe. The stories within can be enjoyed both by skiers and those seeking to stay inspired in their golden years.
“To rejoice in the activities of later years, seeing change but not labeling it decline, is surely the author’s happy secret,” says Dr. Victor Goldin about the book, who adds that it is “worth sharing with a wide audience.”
Hirsch relays his learning experiences with humor, insight and deeply felt observations. While the primary intention is not ski instruction, the book does include techniques the author has learned and developed for himself, which he shares with other older skiers.
Celebrity names both within and without the world of skiing populate the pages of Memoirs. Jean-Claude Killy, Alberto Tomba, Ingemar Stenmark and Pepi Gramshammer are a few of the notable skiers. Hirsch also worked to intertwine “adventure, history, joy and tragedy” in his narratives that involve such diverse individuals as Albert Einstein, Sonny Bono and Michael Kennedy.
The author describes many of the slopes and runs in the 152 areas where he has skied over the years, and shares the sites and sounds of the Winter Olympics and world famous resorts.
Hirsch said he worked to weave “triumphant adventures into stories of celestial sightings, off-piste skullduggery, and confessions of some horrendous, even life-threatening, mistakes.”
The 84-year-old Sea Cliff author has been published in a variety of venues, ski magazines and in the Encyclopedia of Bronzes. He composed lyrics of children’s songs, designed to educate as well as entertain. His writing skills were nurtured during his years as a discussion leader with the Great Books Foundation. Hirsch has served as a ski consultant to travel agencies, ski clubs and various publications.
