Election 2011 – Steering the Conversation

Planning New Section for Campaign Season

Politics is always in season around here. Now, more than ever, with so many big issues on the table and so much in motion, voting on Election Day is just a brief break between elections. This November, there are several big decisions for voters.

The county legislator for this area (the presiding officer of the legislature is trying to redraw districts) will be an open position on the November ballot. Democratic leader Diane Yatauro has announced she will not run for reelection. The 18th Legislative District where she has served as presiding officer and minority leader incorporates our readership of Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Glen Head, Locust Valley and Old Braookville.

There is also a mayoral and council election in the City of Glen Cove.

No candidates have been announced yet, but everyone knows there is a lot of action behind the scenes. Ideas are bouncing around and buzz is growing.

The Record Pilot would like to help the climate of the election season become something productive for the community. In the best circumstances, this time of year brings out important discourse. It encourages voters to raise important questions or suggestions. It gives elected officials in office the chance to promote their successes and hear community concerns. Those with new ideas also have the opportunity to test out support for their vision.

Turn to our editorial section to read more about sharing ideas, questions and concerns. The idea is to work up to Election Day with some structured discussion in the opinion section and some pointed stories by our staff. We will also feature a series of questions to candidates. See inside for more.
