Big Red Ready For Home Opener

To Honor All Who Have Served in Armed Forces

The Glen Cove High School Varsity Football Team is ready to open the 2010 season “under the lights” on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at the J. Cameron Maiden Field at the Glen Cove High School. They kick-off the season playing West Hempstead.

Head Coach Peter Kopecky enters his 20th season at the helm of the Big Red, and is looking for big things from this year’s squad. “Our motto this year is Play as a Team – Work for the Dream,” says Coach Kopecky, “The boys are putting in the extra effort that will lead to the dream of getting into the playoffs.”

This year’s squad will look to its seniors for the leadership needed for playoff teams. Co-captain Shaheem Lilly takes over as quarterback of the Big Red, with his main targets being WR Owen Valance and TE Ronnie Rant and Steven Basile. Johnny Bellock and co-captain Pietro LaFortezza will do the bulk of the running in the Big Red’s Buckshot Offense, with Derek Shearer and Londell Keaton adding extra bursts of speed to the outside. Nick McAdams and Chris Saperstein will share the blocking back duties. The line of co-captains Chris Melillo and Aaron Sylver, Andrew Ayo, Evan Siegal and Stephan Stephens has been working hard opening holes for the Big Red in scrimmages. Providing needed depth for the Big Red offensively will be Johnny Fiorino, Nicky Rant, Nick Manzione, Mario Serrano and Will Kassar. Bobby MacDonald will take over the kicking duties.

Defensively, the linebacking corps of Frankie Gaudio, Melillo, R. Rant, Basile, McAdams, Saperstein, Carlos Gonzales and Charlie Guastella has been looking impressive. The lines of Ayo, Sylver, Siegal, Dan Lynch, Andrew Trakakis, and N. Rant have been solid, while newcomers Reiaz Abas, Joe Curcio and Phil Ferrante will all see time.  DBs Mateo Gaudio, Keaton, Kevin Martinez and Kevin Nicholas will look to control the airways in the opponents’ passing game.

The Big Red is proud to announce that they have joined “Team Chris” and will honor all who have served in our armed forces at the Sept. 11 game. Team Chris is in honor of USMC Corporal Chris Sherer of Northport, who lost his life in Iraq in 2007. The Team follows the Marine duty of “leave no soldier behind.” The Cpl. Christopher Sherer Semper Fi Fund has been helping support our troops both at home and in Iraq and Afganistan. At the game, there will be a raffle for 4 tickets in the Presidential Circle Suite at the Jets-Patriots game on September 19th, at the New Meadowlands Stadium. Money raised in the raffle will go to Sergeant Leo Chargualaf, a marine from Chris’ platoon who was severely injured during his fifth deployment in Iraq.

Tickets for the raffle may be purchased from one of the Big Red Football players, at the game, or at the HS from Athletic Director Denise Kiernan (801-7640). Winner need not be present. Please come out and support the Big Red and Team Chris on the Sept. 11.
