Free Tax Assistance Provided by AARP

The Glen Cove Library will again offer free tax assistance throughout the tax season, on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Assistance will be provided by AARP trained volunteer instructors on a first-come-first-served basis. Bring your tax package, W-2 forms, a copy of your 2012 tax return and all other information that might be helpful in correctly determining your tax refund. All ages.

A History Of The Tuskegee Airmen Presented By William J. Johnson

Before 1940, African Americans were barred from flying for the U.S. military. Civil rights activists and the black press exerted pressure, resulting in the formation of an all-African American pursuit squadron based in Tuskegee, Alabama; in 1941, they became known as the Tuskegee Airmen.  Meet one of these valiant heroes, Glen Cove’s own Bill Johnson, at the Glen Cove Library. 2 p.m.

 

Sweet Valentine Fundraiser 

Gem Craft Boutique will hold a pre-Valentine’s Day fundraiser on Thursday, Feb. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. A portion of proceeds from each gift purchased will go to the American Cancer Society. Complimentary tarot card readings between 6:30 and 8:30 p.m., first-come, first-served.

Enjoy the hot sounds and sensuous rhythms of Latin music legends Tito Puente, Tito Rodriguez, Machito and more on Feb. 9 at 5 p.m. when Congregation Tifereth Israel in Glen Cove presents Sonido Clasico in an evening of Latin Big Band Music. The event, featuring sizzling salsa, sangria and snacks is $23 or $18 for those who reserve by Feb. 6. At 4 p.m., Albert of Ballroom Legacy presents a salsa demonstration and offers instruction. At the Glen Cove Library; Bud Livingston presents a fascinating and entertaining lecture featuring little known facts about Abraham Lincoln.  You’ll learn about his patent (the only president to ever hold one), his peculiar relationship with his father and his alleged love affair with Anne Rutledge.  Listen as Mr. Livingston tells about Lincoln’s trip to New Orleans and his first-hand experiences with slavery, his error in the Gettysburg Address and many other little known facts about our 16th president. 2 p.m.

Relay For Life Kick-Off

At 7:15 p.m., the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of North Shore will officially get underway at the North Shore High School cafeteria with a kickoff rally to launch the fundraising efforts for the year. The rally will feature speakers from the community who have benefited from the funds raised at relay and will honor cancer survivors. This also will be the first opportunity to register a team, learn fundraising tips and information about the event.  The 2014 Relay For Life of North Shore will be held on Saturday, June 7 at North Shore High School. www.relayforlife.org/NorthShoreNY
