24th Annual International Coastal Cleanup

In conjunction with the American Littoral Society will be held at Garvies Point Museum and Preserve, 50 Barry Dr., Glen Cove, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Join thousands of volunteers just like you from Argentina to Vietnam who will be picking up trash from miles of beaches all over the world during the cleanup. Information about the trash collected goes to scientists at the Ocean Conservancy to determine what is polluting our water so that we can help stop it. Come for an hour, two hours, the full three hours. Wear old clothes, sneakers or boots (no sandals or flipflops). Bring water, insect repellent, sunscreen and work gloves, if you have them. AHRC Auction

AHRC (of Brookville/Glen Head) Nassau’s 14th Annual Camp Loyaltown Auction. 6 p.m. cocktails and silent auction; 8 p.m. dinner and live auction. Held at The Swan Club, Glenwood Landing. The auction will honor Michael J. Dowling, president and CEO of the North-Shore-LIJ Health System. The auction benefits AHRC Nassau’s Camp Loyaltown located in Hunter, NY, which serves more than 850 campers annually. Proceeds from previous auctions have funded a much needed state-of-the-art infirmary and a specially-engineered, handicapped-accessible swimming pool. Tickets are $125 per person. Soccer Tournament

Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf will host the 31st annual Eastern Schools for the Deaf Athletic Association Northern Regional Soccer Tournament on Oct. 2 and 3 at the Mitchel Athletic Complex, 1 Charles Lindbergh Blvd., Uniondale. The Mill Neck Manor Chiefs, Western Pennsylvania Lions, Rochester Wildcats, Scranton Bears and St. Mary’s Bisons will compete in this year’s free indoor tournament. While the Mill Neck Manor Chiefs have participated for three years in the tournament, this year marks the first that Mill Neck will host. Coming in second place last year in Rochester was a highlight of the season and has motivated the team to work towards a first place win this year. The tournament schedule is as follows: 3 to 8 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.

North Shore H.S. Class of 1979 Reunion

North Shore High School Class of 1979 is preparing for its 30th reunion this fall at favorite hometown spot, Sea Cliff Yacht Club. The event, which will be held on Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m., will feature a wonderful buffet, open bar, DJ and dancing. Classmates are expected from as far away as California, with one alumni planning to come from his current residence in China. The alumni heading up the reunion have taken full advantage of social media by starting a Facebook Group, called North Shore High School Class of ’79, where they’ve shared information about the reunion, along with old photographs. Golf Classic

Tee off for charity. The Auxiliary of North Shore University Hospital will hold its 31st Annual Golf Classic at The Creek in Locust Valley on Oct. 5. Proceeds from the event will benefit NSUH’s Cardiac Center. Sponsorship opportunities are available for individuals and corporations. Volunteers Needed

The Mill Neck Family of Organizations is seeking volunteers to work at food sales, children’s activities, apple booths and more during the Fall Harvest Festival to be held on Oct. 10 and 11. The outdoor festival, known as “Apple Sale,” features a wide variety of apples and seasonable produce, craft items, a Cheese House, deaf specialty items and much more. Volunteers can work from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 12:30 to 5 p.m. or all day. Food tickets will be provided for all volunteers who work four or more hours. This year, the Mill Neck Family will host a “Kick-Off Breakfast for Volunteers” on Oct. 3 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Deaf Education Center. Open to all 2009 volunteers ages 16 and over, the event will feature a delicious continental breakfast, an orientation and a long-time volunteer recognition ceremony. Have a fond Fall Harvest Memory? •Autoimmune Support Group for anyone coping with an autoimmune disorder, the Nursing Education Department of Glen Cove Hospital offers a free support group the first and third Thursday of each month from 7 to 8 p.m. in the hospital’s Maxwell Board Room ground floor, 101 Saint Andrew’s Ln. The group is open to anyone with an autoimmune disorder such as chronic fatigue syndrome, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, type 1 diabetes, ulcerative colitis and other disorders. An autoimmune disorder is one in which a person’s immune system begins to attack his or her own body.
