American Sign Language Classes

Interested in learning the third most popular language studied in the United States? This fall, Mill Neck Services will offer American Sign Language classes at its new Day Habilitation and Interpreter Services building, 501 S. Broadway, Suite A, Hicksville. Within New York State, many school districts now recognize ASL as a “foreign” language, providing credit towards a Regents diploma. Enroll today in the level 1 adult ASL classes, to be held on Mondays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. from Sept. 14 through Nov. 30. As with other languages, the deaf community, in response to cultural and technological change, is constantly introducing new vocabulary. North Shore H.S. Class of 1979 Reunion

North Shore High School Class of 1979 is preparing for its 30th reunion this fall at favorite hometown spot, Sea Cliff Yacht Club. The event, which will be held on Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m., will feature a wonderful buffet, open bar, DJ and dancing. Classmates are expected from as far away as California, with one alumni planning to come from his current residence in China. The alumni heading up the reunion have taken full advantage of social media by starting a Facebook Group, called North Shore High School Class of ’79, where they’ve shared information about the reunion, along with old photographs. Volunteers Needed

The Mill Neck Family of Organizations is seeking volunteers to work at food sales, children’s activities, apple booths and more during the Fall Harvest Festival to be held on Oct. 10 and 11. The outdoor festival, known as “Apple Sale,” features a wide variety of apples and seasonable produce, craft items, a Cheese House, deaf specialty items and much more. Volunteer support from local civic and church groups, students, alumni, staff, parents and faithful supporters, have made this a special and memorable event. Volunteers can work from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 12:30 to 5 p.m. or all day. Food tickets will be provided for all volunteers who work four or more hours. This year, the Mill Neck Family will host a “Kick-Off Breakfast for Volunteers” on Oct. 3 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Deaf Education Center. Open to all 2009 volunteers ages 16 and over, the event will feature a delicious continental breakfast, an orientation and a long-time volunteer recognition ceremony. Have a fond Fall Harvest Memory? •Autoimmune Support Group for anyone coping with an autoimmune disorder, the Nursing Education Department of Glen Cove Hospital offers a free support group the first and third Thursday of each month from 7 to 8 p.m. in the hospital’s Maxwell Board Room ground floor, 101 Saint Andrew’s Ln. The group is open to anyone with an autoimmune disorder such as chronic fatigue syndrome, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, type 1 diabetes, ulcerative colitis and other disorders. An autoimmune disorder is one in which a person’s immune system begins to attack his or her own body. •Eating Disorders Association-LI (NEDA-LI) (formerly EDCLI) will be holding a support group for eating disorder sufferers and their families and friends. 10 to 11:30 a.m. at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset (ask at the main reception desk for location within the hospital). Visit Us at the Animal Shelter

The Glen Cove Animal Lovers’ League Shelter invites the public to visit the shelter to meet the many loving dogs and cats available for adoption. All cats have been tested, vaccinated and neutered and all dogs are vet checked. Our dog trainer/adoption coordinator will match one of our wonderful dogs with you and your family. Glen Cove Adult Day Care

This program for the frail elderly is available Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A warm, inviting, secure place to spend the day with a caring, experienced and responsive staff. Transportation is provided to residents of Glen Cove and some surrounding communities. Lunch and snacks are served daily.
