The Young Performers Talent Competition will be held at the Parish Hall at St. Patrick’s Church in Glen Cove. Contestants may ask for an audition time between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. and they will be accommodated in the order requested. The competition is open to all talented young people who reside or study on the North Shore of Nassau County only. There are three cash prizes. The winner is usually in the age range of 16 to 25, but a younger winner is possible. The age limit is 25 years old. The junior winner age category is 10 to 15. The popular music/song winner age category is 10 to 25. Contestants may be vocalists or instrumentalists and each is required to perform two contrasting pieces (different styles) of their own choice. Contestants may perform to mp3, CD or taped music, but must bring their own battery-operated player to the audition. There will be fun for one and all at the Saint Boniface Feast by the Shore, a four-day celebration May 17 (6 to 10 p.m.), May 18 (6 to 11 p.m.), May 19 (1 to 11 p.m.) and May 20 (1 to 6 p.m.) at Harry Tappen Beach, Shore Rd., Glenwood Landing. The feast will showcase rides and games from Newton Shows for people of all ages. A large assortment of vendors and delicious homemade food items will be available. Musical entertainment will take place nightly in the Town of Oyster Bay Showmobile. Sea Scout Ship 12 is holding an open house for new members and their parents on from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Glen Cove Yacht Club in Glen Cove. The Sea Scouts is a coed program for young adults 14 to 20 years old (or 13 and completed eighth grade) and is part of the Boy Scouts of America. Ship 12 meets every other week at the Glen Cove Yacht Club to learn about boating safety, nautical heritage and to gain sailing and boating skills. Ship 12 sails its Pearson Commander sloop Good Buddy out of the Glen Cove Yacht Club every Thursday during the summer months and participates in a number of exciting and educational trips throughout the year. Join North Shore Land Alliance for a series of events for volunteers to pull this extremely invasive vine at preserves in Old Brookville and Upper Brookville. •Open to the public is the center’s exciting permanent exhibit which uses photographs, artifacts, and video to present the events of the Holocaust and relate them to more recent genocides and acts of intolerance.
•Ludovit Feld, the Little Giant: artist, rescuer and Auschwitz survivor. Ludovit Feld and his family were deported in 1944, first to Kosice Ghetto, and three weeks later to Auschwitz. Upon arriving at Auschwitz, Mengele selected Feld for medical experiments because he was a dwarf. Feld was kept alive for his artistic talent. Housed together with “Mengele’s twins,” Feld hid several of them, ensuring their rescue. Ludovit Feld’s collection is being displayed for the first time in the U.S. Only two original pieces drawn in the ghetto are known to have survived, one is hanging in Yad Vashem’s museum and the other will be on display through June 30.
