The North Shore softball team started their league schedule on Monday in an unfortunate loss to Wantagh. They bounced back and were able to defeat Friends Academy on Wednesday, in the bottom of the seventh, off a game-winning base hit by Regan Falk. Elle Hoffman helped lead the offense by going 3 for 4 with a pair of RBIs. The Lady Vikings finished off this week by defeating West Hempstead 9-1 on Saturday. Jen Melgar went 3 for 4 and two runs scored to help out with the offense. Defensively, the team made some great plays with the help of Melgar's strong arm behind the plate and quick thinking. Hanna Hacker had another great win with 14 strike outs and 1 walk. The Lady Vikings are back in action on Monday against East Rockaway at North Shore High School. "Come down and show your support!" said a fan.
The North Shore's Boy's Baseball team started their season on Tuesday, March 31 with an impressive win over Jericho. North Shore's John Scuderi went 2-for-2 at the plate with a homerun that had fans cheering and his father chasing after the ball hit over the left field fence. Scuderi also had two RBI's and scored twice. Senior Trevor Canella pitched five innings giving up no runs on three hits, he also had four strikeouts. Trevor went 3-for-3 at the plate. In the end, North Shore walked off the field with heads held high, a loud and happy cheering section and an 8-0 win under their belt.
The Vikings are 4-2 on their season with wins over Carle Place, Oceanside, Clarke and Plainedge with a league record of 2-2. Seniors Taylor Spallone and Laura Cvikevich have led on attack along with freshman Michaela Dussel. The Vikings midfield is key on transition with their speed and aggression. Freshman Amanda Johansen, sophomore Lauren Janelli and junior Kathleen Lennon have taken control of the midfield along with sophomore Sam Grabher. Senior Erin Tornatore and freshman Cara Dellavecchia rotate throughout the midfield and the defense allowing the Vikings to capitalize on their strengths. Sophomores Denise Kilderry and Danielle Valasiadis solidify the defense with junior goalkeeper Karli Portnoy. Offensively, the Vikings have created a wealth of scoring opportunities with offensive threats both on attack and in the midfield. The team will meet East Meadow, Massapequa and Calhoun in the upcoming weeks.
The North Shore High School golf team opened its season this week with a match against Jericho High School. The match at Old Westbury Country Club was a close single-stroke win by Jericho. In a very tight conference, just about every match the Vikings will face this year will be very close. The team was led by Peter Filippi, Jon Pirozzi and Eric Michalak, who shot the three lowest rounds for North Shore. The team gets another shot at Jericho next week in a home match at Brookville Country Club.
North Shore's Varsity Tennis Team opened its season on the road against Clarke. Due to inclement weather on Wednesday, the Vikings had to wait an extra day and travel instead of playing at North Shore. Unfortunately, the Vikings were not up to the task and lost 2-5. Securing victories for North Shore were the doubles team of Andie Ferreira and Tanner Korponay at first doubles and Mitch Goidel and Ryan Kianofsky at third doubles. Dylan Talcott played extremely well in a loss to all-county player Evan Pincus in three sets. North Shore looks to rebound this week with two matches. They are hoping the weather will hold up.
