The Girls Lacrosse season has begun with 42 girls on the squad, a record number for the team. This is incredibly exciting for the coaches, who said they have been busy utilizing as much indoor space as possible because of the snow covered field outside.
"This has not dampened any of our spirits," a coach said, "as we have been able to really practice our stick skills and techniques and get all the girls to fully work on using their non dominant hand.
This season the varsity team is returning 15 players so competition for the few remaining spots is very competitive.
The team is led by captains Sofia Christopoulos, Kelsea Valance, Yvonne Mennuti and Megan Gardrvits. They are joined by six more seniors.
There is snow and ice on the field, but the Girls Softball program is in spring mode. In preparation for the season, the JV and Varsity teams have been utilizing gym time for conditioning, hitting, fielding and pitching.
The tenacious young squad, led by seniors Sonia Canales, Kristin Cornelis and Victoria Garcia, are enthusiastic about the up-coming season.
"Dedication-Determination-Drive is our motto," said the coach.
The snow on the tennis courts will not keep the Boys Varsity Tennis team from working hard. For the first week of tryouts, the tennis squad has been running in the hallways and pushing each other every step of the way, the coach said.
With an amazing turnout, the 20 Glen Cove student athletes all have positive attitudes and are determined to put Glen Cove Tennis on the map. As soon as some good weather comes around, the team will transfer their hard work in the hallways to the courts.
