I read with regret about the closing of Knickerbocker Yacht Club. To many readers, the term "yacht club" may evoke an image of idle wealth, but the yacht clubs of the North Shore are far removed from that stereotype. The reality is that they provide accessible waterfront settings where families relax, join together in a spirit of camaraderie and good sportsmanship and fully appreciate the natural beauty of our shoreline and the recreational opportunities it affords.
Knickerbocker Yacht Club has been an important part of that camaraderie since shortly after the Civil War. Its presence will be missed both by its members and other North Shore residents, who unfortunately can only look forward to another seafood restaurant or condominium complex taking its place.
