Heading into the last week of the season, the North Shore Girls Varsity Basketball Team was 8-1 and in first place in Conference ABC-III with three games to go.
The first game was a rematch with the only team to beat them, the Bulldogs of Roslyn. In the first meeting, the Vikings came out flat and paid for it but this time made a real team decision to play lock-down defense. Led by the defensive efforts of Justyne Passarelli, Amanda Johansen, Elle Hoffman, Liz Sheerin, Jackie Gioia and Jennie Berglin, the Vikings held Roslyn to 13 first-half points as they raced to a 27-13 halftime lead. The offense was led once again by Chloe Johnson (16 points, 19 rebounds) and Kathleen Lennon (14 points, 14 rebounds) as the Vikings avenged their only conference loss by a score of 47-41.
Next the Vikings took on upstart Sewanhaka and once again they let the defense do the talking. Behind Kathleen Lennon's (14) Chloe Johnson's (11) combined 25 first half points, the Vikings raced out to a 35-13 half-time lead. Stellar defense was again applied by all, as key defensive contributions were made by Erin Sheerin, Regan Falk, Cara Dellavecchia and Jen Melgar. Led by Kathleen Lennon's first career triple-double (17 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists) the Vikings cruised to a 59-30 victory, which clinched the Conference ABC-III title.
The school offered congratulations to the girls on an outstanding season. The next game for the girls will be the playoffs. Readers can check the North Shore website for time and place.
