The Glen Cove Varsity Wrestling Team won the 2008 Cove Cup in a close win over Lawrence, Port Washington and Holy Trinity. This year the team was set to defend its title and keep the Cove Cup in their own trophy case.
This year's tournament saw the Big Red face off against Lawrence, Port Washington and Sewanhaka East.
The team started off well with 96-pound freshman Gorov Sodhi taking first place. Freshman Ricky Liang also added a victory at 119. Mike Iannetta, at 130 pounds, started a string of weight classes where Glen Cove took first place. He was followed by Hector Paez, Pat Cook, Alexey Bogdanich and Sasha Bogdanich all taking first place.
Seniors Jamie Theodorou and Harrison Balisky wrestled well for Glen Cove, winning key matches. Kevin Gardrvits continued to wrestle well taking first place. Julio Bonilla managed to take second place honors. Dan Belfiore finished the tournament for Glen Cove taking first place at 285 pounds.
Senior Pat Cook was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler for Glen Cove.
The following week, the team traveled to Herricks for the Highlander Tournament. Several freshmen including Evan Siegel, Nick Manzione, Bryon Wilkins, Matteo Gaudio and sophomore Erik Dillon wrestled very well for Glen Cove. Herricks is always a very tough test for the wrestlers. Nick McAdams, Ricky Liang, Jakub Micko, Derek Shearer, Aaron Sylver, Piero Dilorenzo and Gorov Sodhi continued to develop as varsity wrestlers. All of these freshmen will be competing in the County Qualifier in a few weeks.
The upperclassmen had solid tournaments. Sasha Bogdanich, Dan Belfiore, Alexey Bogdanich, Jamie Theodorou and Harrison Balisky all placed for the Big Red. Pat Cook, Mike Iannetta and Kevin Gardrvits each took second place. Hector Paez had an outstanding tournament, winning five matches to earn first place.
The team said they look forward to the qualifiers and counties coming up right around the corner.
